Dozier's two home runs, 7 RBI lift St. Lucie 13-10 By MIKE MELTON Special to The Palm Beach Post PORT ST. LUCIE - When the pressure is on, D.J. Dozier is the man the St. Lucie Mets want in their corner. Dozier went 4-for-5, including two home runs, and drove in a club-record seven runs to lead the Mets to a 13-10 victory over the Fort Lauderdale Yankees Wednesday night at the St. Lucie County Sports Complex. Dozier's big night was well-timed a cable television crew was in town doing a story on him. But Dozier, a Minnesota Vikings running back, felt tio extra pressure. "No, not really," he said. "If I'd have struck out three times, well, that's just the way it goes. As long as I go to the plate and do my best. If I'm up here (playing well), great, if I'm not, then I've got to work to get up there. I just have to count my blessings." "D.J. just crushed the ball tonight," said St. Lucie manager Tim Blackwell. "He hit those balls hard, hard, hard." Dozier's seven RBI broke the Mets club record of six, set last year by Alan Zinter in a game against the Vero Beach Dodgers. The teams combined for 30 hits. Five were home runs, and 16 of 18 players had at least one hit (the Mets' James Morrisette and Lee May were the exceptions). "Alan (Zinter) missed a couple (home runs) by just a grain or two (of the bat)," said Blackwell. "He just wasn't quite extended enough. Nikco (Riesgo) hit the ball good, and the heart of the batting order did a good job. They're getting the good part of the bat on the ball." St. Lucie (20-14) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, and eight Mets batted in the third inning to get three runs on five hits for a 5-0 win. Florida State League Fort Lauderdale starter and losing pitcher Jeff Johnson (1-3) lasted only three innings, allowing five runs on seven hits. Ken Greer relieved Johnson, but lasted only two batters before being hit by a line drive, which forced him out of the game. The Yankees (17-17) cut the deficit to 5-2 in the top of the fourth inning when Gerald Williams hit a home run with Rico Cortes on base. It was his FSL-leading sixth home run of the' year. The Mets scored five runs in their half of the fourth to take a 10-2 lead. Eight St. Lucie players batted, Riesgo had a two-run triple, and Dozier hit his second homer of the year, a line drive over the left-center field fence that scored three runs. Jeff Livesey started the Yankees fifth inning with a solo home run, his fourth of the season, to make the score 10-3. The Yankees scored again in the sixth to make it 10-4, but St. Lucie widened its lead to eight runs in their half of the sixth when Dozier hit a two-run double. St. Lucie starting pitcher Dan Furmanik (4-2) went six innings to get the win, giving up four runs on six hits while walking four and striking out four. Paul Johnson came into the game in the seventh inning for the Mets. Fort Lauderdale scored four runs in the eighth on four hits, including Ed Pimentel's two-run double, making it 12-8. But Dozier wasn't finished, as he hit his second homer of the evening, a solo shot with one out that made the score 13-8.
