Convicted Dade murderer still missing after escape A Miami man who is a convicted murderer and allegedly led the deadly "Dixie Mafia" drugsmuggling ring remained at large today after escaping from Union Correctional Institution, prison officials said. Suspected drug dealer Richard Douglas Cravero, 44, was last seen at the North Florida prison's main housing unit Tuesday afternoon. He wasn't missed until 10 p.m. that night, Cravero in '73 told the Gainesville Sun. Cravsuperintendent Marion E Ellis ero and his partner, Ronald Clifford Chandler, were serving life sentences for convictions of 1975 and 1976 murders in Dade and Monroe counties. Both Cravero and Chandler faced federal drug charges when and if they were released from state prison. The "Dixie Mafia" employed some 50 people and imported an estimated $110 million in cocaine and marijuana and was accused of murdering rivals, suspected informants, and, at times, bystanders, said George Havens of the Dade State Attorney's Office.
