Brewers uperad Podgier s, 5-3 BY SCOTT EIBLMAYR IR Sports writer The Helena Brewers said No Way to losing two in a row at home Sunday afternoon. Brewer batters combined for 13 hits, 11 more than Saturday night, en route to a 5-3 win over the Great Falls Dodgers at Kindrick Legion Field in front of 1,913 fans. Juan Flores was named Most Valuable Player as he slugged two hits in four at-bats, scored once, and drove in one RBI. Flores was one for 10 at the plate coming into the game. Getting used to the wooden bats, said Flores was a reason of his short slump. The Dodgers were thinking of sweeping the Brew 'Crew as they scored two runs in the first inning. Garey Ingram started things with a lead off double, Lonnie Webb managed to get aboard safely compliments of an error and Ingram went to third on the play. Raul Mondesi hit a grounder to the, shortstop, Mike Carter, but his throw was errant and Mondesi went to second, Webb to third, and Ingram scored. Two batters later, Tim Griffin hit a hard roller to third and was thrown out at first, but he picked up the RBI as Webb scored. Helena tried to answer back with one out in the bottom of the first when Scott Moseley hit an infield chopper and beat out the throw for a single. But the next two hitters both struck out to end the inning. The Dodgers first three batters in the second all scattered consecutive singles to load the bases. Keoki Farrish stepped up and sent a high pop fly to right field which looked like it would score the runner on third. Mike Couture, however, made the catch and fired a bullet to the Flores, the catcher. The ball bounced away from Flores but a heads-up-play by the pitcher, Jason Zimbauer, backed up the throw and kept the run from scoring. The Brewers failed to capitalize as Flores was forced out at second. The Dodgers threatened again in the third, but Couture made a spectacular leaping grab and saved Helena from more run damage. In the bottom of the same inning, Mike Carter layed down a beautiful bunt single and contin ued to second on a throwing error. Carter advanced 4o third on Moseleys ground-out. Tony Coble, who is seventh in the Pioneer League in batting, sliced a short blooper over second to score Carter and cut Great Falls lead to 3-1. Coble, asked about his early season success this year, was his own critic when he stated I could do better." Coble said he practiced with wooden bats before the pro camps; so hitting with them now was an easy transition. He is now batting .444 on the year. Zimbauer, who had given up four hits in two innings, allowed just one in the next five innings. The Brewers then helped their pitcher out with a barrage of hits in the bottom of the fourth.
