All-Star win goes to Taylor By MIKE POTTER The Herald-Sun FREDERICK, Md. - Scott Taylor went to the Carolina League All-Star Game and showed just why he has been one of the top hurlers in the league all season. The Durham Bulls' ace struck out three in two innings, allowing his only baserunner on an error, and picked up the decision in the Southern Division's 6-5 win over the North Wednesday night at Harry Grove Stadium. "I was just throwing a little of this, a little of that--nothing special," said Taylor, who won the inaugural "Winner's Edge Tobaccoless Chew" award for the victory. "It was fun to play on this kind of team. "I had a few jitters when I first got out there [in the fourth inning] but after that everything was all right. It helped some that I had my own catcher Javy Lopez, replaced by teammate Eddie Perez in the seventh inning]. I got some good defense behind me and that helped a lot." Lopez wasn't surprised at Taylor's performance. "That's the way he's been throwing all year," said the catcher, who picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the South's two-run first inning. "'He didn't change anything. His slider and fastball were both working very well." The South's solid defense made the difference in the game. The host North outhit the Southerners, 11-7, with three doubles and a home run in the mix. But the winners had the better gloves, with just one error to the hosts' four. "We had a little better timely hitting than they did," South manager Brian Graham of Kinston said. "And we didn't make as many mistakes as they did." The South also got good pitching under pressure, as Kinston's Mike Soper came on with the tying run on second in he seventh inning and got Salem's Daryl Ratliff to ground out to short. Lynchburg's Boo Moore won the "Howe Star of Stars" award despite the defeat, as he went three-for-four and scored a run. Moore, who is hitting .245 with 11 homers but has struck out 99 times with just 25 walks, said he is on a hot streak right now. "I was just lucky tonight, I guess," Moore said. "I've been taking extra b.p. [batting practice lately], and tonight I got some pitches I could hit." NOTES--Moore and Taylor had actually tied for the "Star see ALL-STARS/B3:
