M's end season with a sweep sweep oJ By Kevin lole Free Press Staff Writer With one swing of the bat, Jim Wilson set a franchise record, won a share of the Eastern League home run title and made sure the Vermont Mariners stayed home for two more days. Wilson hit a dramatic three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning of the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday to give t the Mariners a 5-3 win over the Albany Yankees. The M's won the second game, 9-8, on Jorge Uribe's sacrifice fly in the seventh. In the minor leagues, doubleheader games are regularly scheduled for seven innings. The M's needed to win one of their two games or have Pittsfield lose one of its two in Glens Falls to ensure they would finish second and have home-field advantage for the first round of the Eastern League playoffs. Vermont trailed 3-2 entering the seventh, but Chuck Carr got an infield single with one out and then went to second on a Steve Murray grounder. Yankee manager Stump Merrill removed starter Don Stanford in favor of reliever Gabriel Rodriguez, who pitched around Ken Griffey Jr. and walked him on four pitches. That brought up Wilson, who entered the night with 16 home runs, behind league-leader Chris Holes of 'Glens Falls. One pitch later, the M's had one of their most important wins of the season. Wilson launched a fastball down the middle 430 feet over the center field fence. W "To be able to win the game with a home run in that situation is a real good feeling," said Wilson. "I was swinging the bat well tonight and I knew I was going to get a good at-bat, but I wasn't going to predict a home run. I just wanted to do something and make sure we won the game." It was a good night for Wilson all; around. He was 3-for-3 with two runs Turn to M'S, 6B
