Police Search For Motive in Britton Murder Cambridge detectives said today that the most frustrating factor in their investigation into the- Jane Britton murder is the complete lack of motive. "If we only had some kind of a handle to this case we might make some progress," said one investigator. Another pointed out that the brutal slaying might have been the work of a dope addict who was on some kind of "junk trip" at the time and now is acting normally. Miss Britton was found bludgeoned to death in her fourth-floor apartment at 6 University rd., Cambridge, last Tuesday. Her skull was crushed by multiple blows from a sharp instrument, believed to be a hatchet or a pickhead-type hammer. The only slim lead police have is a set of unidentified fingerprints, which have been sent to State Police and the FBI for possible identification. Meanwhile, members of the ML Auburn tenants union, made up of residents of the apartment block where the slaying took place, filed a complaint in East Cambridge District Court this morning against Harvard University alleging violation of the General Laws because of the lack of locks on vestibule doors. A hearing was scheduled for Jan. 27. The block is owned by Harvard but is managed and maintained by R. M.
