Pittsfield Mets rout Elmira, 8-3 ELMIRA, N.Y. - Tim McClin-ton drove in three runs and Brian Dunn hit his first home run of the season as the Pittsfield Mets rolled to an 8-3 victory over the Elmira Pioneers before 3,199 at Dunn Field last night N.Y.-Penn League The Mets also got a solid pitching performance out of starter Peter Walker (4-5), who gave up three hits in seven innings. Game 2 of this three-game series will be played tonight at 7. The game will be broadcast on VVBEC, beginning at 6:40. Jumped ahead early The Pioneers opened last night's game as if they hadn't slept a wink which they almost hadn't. Elmira played a twi-night doubleheader Tuesday, including a 14-inning nightcap. The Mets took advantage of the sleepwalking early. Pittsfield jumped on starter Mark Mitehelson (1-2) for a pair of runs on two hits in the first. Kyle Washington walked, stole second, and Tim Buhe walked. They scored on back-to-back RBI singles by McClinton and Ed Perozo. Pittsfield added three runs in the third inning. Washington led off with a triple, Buhe walked and McClinton's single plated Washington; Perozo reached on an error to load the bases, and Buhe scored when Alberto Castillo hit into a double play, moving McClinton to third. Robbie Guzik made it 5-0, driving McClinton home with an RBI single. McClinton, who went 2-for-3, drove in his third run in a two-run fourth inning, hitting a sacrifice fly that plated Joe Ar-redondo. The Mets' seventh run scored on an error. A great homecoming Perozo, who played for the Pi-' oneers last year, returned to Elmira for the first time since the Boston organization traded him to the New York Mets for Mike Marshall. It was a pleasant homecoming, as the big right-fielder went 3-for-5 with two RBI. In the fifth inning, Dunn belted a one-out pitch from reliever Brian Dunn First homer for Mets Shea Wardwell over the left-field wall for his first home run of the season to complete the Pittsfield scoring. Wardwell is normally an infielder, as Elmira had to use three position players as pitchers last night because of several recent doubleheaders. The Mets had 10 hits off the four Elmira pitchers, but scored only the one run against the three position players who pitched. Mets starter Walker got off to a shaky start, wriggling out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the first. After retiring the side in the second, the right-hander from the University of Connecticut had runners on second and third with one out in the third, but again got out of the inning without a run scoring. After that. Walker found his stride. Including the final two outs in the third, he retired 14 of the next 15 batters. Jeff Lim-oncelli's single in the seventh inning broke the string. Mike Sciortino came in for the eighth, and the Mets reliever lost the shutout, giving up three runs on three straight singles and a double.
