12A The Bellingham Herald Police catch suspect in two murders (Continued from Page 1A) Wednesday Canadian officials Wednesday formally issued a no-bail first-degree murder warrant accusing Curtis of killing Steven Kay Johnson a 35-year-old customs agent Johnson was found dead July 5 with numerous stab wounds in the chest Officials believe he had been dead at least a wreck The body of David Nison 30 a resident of Naugatuck Conn was found stabbed several times in the torso and wrapped in a blanket on Goose Rocks Beach near Kenne-bunkport a town about 40 miles south of Portland Maine His body was found June 9 The Maine State Police issued a warrant against Curtis 10 days later Curtis also is wanted on larceny warrants from Sparks Nev and Santa Kosa Calif said Detective Sgt Dan Parkinson of the Peel Regional Police near Toronto In 'addition Skagit County officials are contemplating filing charges against Curtis in connection with Tuesday's high-speed chase and capture Officials also are checking into allegations Curtis is wanted for questioning about crimes in several other states - According to Canadian police Johnson and Curtis had been involved in a homosexual affair And an affidavit with the Maine murder warrant quotes several people as saying Curtis and Nixon had had a homosexual relationship Johnson lived alone in his apartment in Mississauga Ontario That’s near Pearson International Airport where Johnson had been a customs inspector for eight months before his death Johnson left work June 21 to begin a two-week vacation He was last seen alive June 26 at a dental clinic said James Waite regional director of the US Customs internal affairs office in Ixw Angeles Beginning the next day someone started moving toward the west coast of Canada using Johnson's credit cards to make purchases he said A description of the man was obtained by police after talking to store employees On July 3 a family found Johnson's passport and customs badge at a shopping center in Kamloops BC Two days later Johnson's body was found The description of the suspect and Johnson’s leased car a 1987 black Chrysler Lc Baron convertible was then sent to law officials throughout Canada to US border stations and to US law agencies on the West Coast There is some dispute over whether Curtis is the person he says he is On July 7 tourists in Medicine Hat Alberta found a wallet containing identification belonging to a Toronto-area man named Jurgen Dewever Dewever physically resembles the person seen earlier using Johnson’s credit cards Waite said Waite suggested that Curtis may be Dewever who has a criminal record involving robbery and the fencing of Jewelry Parkinson said that Issue is a “red herring" — that Dewever Is in Jail near Vancouver BC At 3:15 pm Tuesday a customs inspector at the Peace Arch border station in Blaine saw a convertible fitting the description of Johnson's car said Bob Sanford US Customs agent-in-charge at Blaine The car had a Canadian license plate previously reported stolen in Calgary Alberta and listed on the border station’s computer The customs inspector talked briefly to the driver then asked him to pull over for further questioning The driver began to pull over but then sped away southbound on Interstate 5 Sanford said State and local law agencies were alerted but the car wasn't seen again until about S pm near the Alger exit on 1-5 he said Customs officials Mount Vernon police and Skagit County sheriff deputies Joined In the pursuit When the driver left 1-5 and begun driving west toward Conway law officers gave chase at speeds up to 95 mph Sanford continued The chase ended on Highway 9 near Big Lake when Curtis braked hard and skidded onto the shoulder of the road Once he stopped Curtis did not resist arrest and he was not armed Sanford said
