Suspect in remains at LIBERTY A suspect m a double murder here Dec. 9, 1973, continues to elude police after escaping a. Florida jail on Nov. 27. The Lake Butler (Fla.) Corrections Center reported Monday that no trace has been found of Chandler Littlefield. 31, of Belfast. A nationwide alert has been broadcast for the Maine resident. . Another Belfast man. Charles Heald, 37, of Belfast, has been arrested in connection with the case and awaits trial in Waldo County Superior Court. On Dec. 9, police spy,; Jack and Florice Bettencourt were slain in their Liberty home. The . couple operated a clothing store in town. Jack slaying large Bettencourt was known to have carried large sums of money. Police say the investigation into the Liberty murdei is' continuing with more arrests possible. ' In Florida, Littlefield w as convicted of assault and battery w ith intent to kill in Orlando. Charges against him because of other shooting incidents in other areas were dropped upon the conviction and five-year prison term sentence from the Orlando trial. Littlefield, with a companion, escaped from .the Florida jail by cutting through two fences. He was scheduled to be extradited the following week by Maine State police!
