Police get letter in murder case NEWPORT — A new letter has been received by Maine State Police in Houlton bn the murder of Robert McKee Newport who was shot three times in the head June 20 while working at a Newport gas station Newport Police Chief Charles Hawkins said if the letter is legitimate it would place the letter writer at the scene of the crime at the approximate time of the crime The slaying was said to have taken place sometime between 2 and 4 am Another letter from Oakland has been determined to be a hoax Hawkins said Although he said he could not reveal the contents of the letter the chief said if the evidence in it is true it could be very valuable in finding McKee’s killer It will involve a lot of footwork and investigation Hawkins said Police don’t know where the letter came from or who wrote it He said there are a number of potential witnesses who still have to be interrogated 7
