Those forms were sent m mid-August. Then, Maine authorities received another form from Florida, requesting that two officers be named to pick up Littlefield. That form was also returned. It was then that the attorney general's office in Maine was informed by the chief corrections official in Florida that Littlefield could not legally leave Florida. The unnamed official told Maine authorities that he had been orally informed by the Florida attorney general that the Belfast man could not be released. Atwood received that news and conferred with Maine Attorney General Jon Lund. A letter was sent to the Florida attorney general questioning the legal base for his stance. About two weeks ago, the Florida attorney general wrote to Lund and Atwood, denying thahe ever made such a statement.- The Florida official said nothing stood in the way .of returning Littlefield to Maine to stand trial. Now, how soon that can be concluded is questionable, Atwood said, It1 could be that I'll have to go and straighten it out myself. There is just no excuse for this. There has never been a reason cited for any of this. The next Waldo County Superior Court term will start in February.
