Innocent plea given in slaying BELFAST - Chandler Littlefield 32 pleaded innocent when arraigned in Waldo County Superior Court on Monday in connection with a double slaying on Dec 9 1973 Littlefield a Belfast native had been returned from California where he was given a probated sentence on the condition that he waive extradition proceedings for the return to Maine The indictment charged Littlefield with the murders "with malice aforethought” of Joaquin and Florence Bettencourt of Liberty The elderly couple were found in their home about one mile from Die discount clothing store they operated in liberty The owner of the store was reported to carry large amount of cash because of his stated distrust of banks Littlefield was indicted by a Waldo County Grand Jury in May 1974 Since that time he was arrested and convicted on gun charges in Orlando Fla He escaped from jail there in November 1974 and was arrested in San Die) Calif on April 11 pulling a gun on policemen Court F F r c requested Dinted attorney Romanow and received from Justice William E McCarthy an extension from 10 to 20 days for the filing of motions Romanow Indicated he would request ball in the case Justice McCarthy suld he would entertain a motion for bail Dressed in a yellow shirt (Cont’d on Page 2 Col 3)
