Arrest linked to murder probe LIBERTY -Investigation into a December double slaying in this Waldo County town; continues. One man was arrested thisweek, with more arrests anticipated. John and Florence Bettencourt were found slain in their Route 173 home on Dec. 13. Police said they were both shot to death. Bettencourt, known to carry large amounts of money, operated a clothing store in town. The Waldo County Sheriff's Office is holding Charles Heald, 37, of Belfast on a charge of conspiracy to rob the Bettencourts on a date sometime before the murder. State police emphasized that the charge has nothing specifically to do with the actual murder. He is being held under $25,000 bail. In Fort Lauderdale, Fla.,' Wednesday, Chandler Littlefield, 31, of Belfast was convicted of two counts of aggravated assault and given two concurrent five -year sentences. Littlefield has been indicted by a Waldo County jury in connection with the Bettencourt slayings. Maine authorities indicated that extradition procedures will be initiated against Littlefield if he refuses to return to Maine voluntarily to face the murder charges. Littlefield was paroled from Maine State Prison in August, 1973, after imprisonment on a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon. State Police Detective Gerald Boutilier said more arrests in the case are likely.
