Shoe Shop X-Rays to be Supervised The State Health Commission decided yesterday to approve proposed regulations to supervise the use of X-rays for fitting shoes. The regulations, drafted by Commonwealth and State health officers, were submitted to the commission by the head of the industrial hygiene section of the State Department of Health (Dr. O. D. Shields). They require Ministerial approval. Dr. Shields said that X- rays for shoe fittings were dangerous to customers and employes if the machines were not properly operated. Exposure for too long was the main danger. Damage to the skin and other complaints could develop, and in children growing bones could be affected. The effects might not show for some years. Experience in the United States had shown that X-ray facilities in shoe stores were mainly an advertisement, and were not really necessary. The best shoe fitter was a good salesman.
