Salem sings in seas season-ending victory at Eugene By Capi Lynn The Statesman Journal EUGENE - Pitcher Pedro Perez orchestrated the tune Friday as the Salem Dodgers waltzed to a 4-1 victory against the Eugene Emeralds to end the season on a winning note. Perez (2-2) went seven innings in his third start, holding the Emeralds to four hits - all of which came with two outs. The right-hander struck out five and walked one. "It was my best game of the year," he said. "I wanted to throw the whole game and finish strong." Pitching coach Burt Hooton Perez' numbers spoke for themselves. "He did an outstanding job, got pretty good groove and kept it going whole game," Hooton said. The Dodgers (41-35) scored in the inning on Rex Peters' single. Peters in Rafael Rijo, who had reached base an error. After Eugene tied it in the fourth ning, Salem picked up two runs in sixth. Jorge Alvarez led off with a and scored on an error after Peters singled. Peters later scored on a doubleplay ball. The Dodgers scored their first three runs off Eugene starter Don Lindsey (3-1), who had held Salem to one unearned run Monday to earn a victory at Chemeketa Field. Peters said: "He did a pretty good job on us at our place, so it was nice to get back at him. He's the type of guy who drives you nuts with off-speed stuff. We just needed to be patient, and we did that." Salem scattered seven hits off Lindsey. Peters, Hector Ortiz and Eric Boddie said in a the first drove on inthe double had each had two of the Dodgers' 10 hits. Boddie singled off Lindsey and tripled off reliever Skip Wiley. Bob Fletcher relieved Perez in the eighth inning and retired six of the eight batters he faced for the save. "I felt kind of so-so, but I got the job done," Fletcher said. "I'm happy with what I've accomplished, considering what I've been through the last couple of years." Fletcher, who had surgery on his left elbow in April 1988, spent all of last season rehabilitating. The left-hander joined the Salem club late in July, moving up from Great Falls, and recorded one win and three saves in 10⅔ innings of work for the Dodgers. Salem manager Tom Beyers was pleased with his club's final outing. "That was a great way to finish it in front of their big crowd," he said. "The kids had fun out there tonight, and we executed all around." Eugene established a new Northwest League season record for attendance by drawing 6,124 fans Friday. The Emeralds drew 141,134 for the season, breaking the record of 137,372 they set last year.
