j j Septem- Dedication of the Sew Opera Boose A OALA WEEK TOB THE 'BUKO Truly the present week is a joyful one to many of tlie citizens of tlie village of Shullsburg tlie occasion being the formal opening or dedication of the new Grand Opera House by the ' celebrated Simon Comedy Company A year ago about tills time onr citizens in an unostentatious manner becoming -them celebrated the advent of the new railroad This month they devote a week aided by the above admirable atul deservedly popular company of lady and gentlemen artists in dramatically dedicating - Copeland’s New Opera House for public use The railroad is a 'public necessity— an Opera House is a public luxury tlie former indispensable— the latter an indisputable proof of a community’s liberality to support it -one one’s unbounded generosity in erecting it Adi liail we say to Mr Joseph Copeland for his public-spiritedness manifested in erecting in the historic village of Shullsburg an edifice that is not only a q all-time monument of beauty to tlie memory of its builder but to tlie village and countyl Tlie railroad is an enterprise of a corporation— our Opera House is tlie enterprise of a most enterprising citizen Railroads are extended for a paying investment— Opera Houses in villages especially are built for local beauty and public pleasure and convenience— hence we infer that of all railroad contributions ail local improvements tliattliere has been nothing yet done tiiat compares with tlie munificent privilege kindly extended to our citizens by Joseph Copeland -Tlie bail lias a capacity of seating comfortably HUO people with stage scenery Ac suitable for dramatic and other entertainments Tlie ceiling is elaborately frescoed and the whole is one panorama of beauty The work is artistically executed and reflects great credit upon Stanley A Slaughter the artists The carpenter work was done by JStevens & Ivey and John Thompson which is a safe guarantee of a good job Tlie whole affair is perfection itself and it is needless to add that a prouder people of the new Opera House than those of Shullsburg could not be - It was this new structure that the Simon Comedy Company has the honor of dedicating At tliia writing (Thursday morning) but half the week's entertainment lias passed lmt tills immense hall 1ms been well filled with one of the most intelligent appreciative and enthusiastic amlieiiees ever brought together not withstanding tli equinoctial changes Monday night “Flirtation or Love at Long Branch” was presented This is a society play and was only given to whet tlie appetite for something more grand and soul-stirring— Tiiis was given the public on Tuesday night in tlie sliape of tlie great four-act sensational comedy “Solomon Isaacs” J A Simon in his original creation of “Solomon Isases'’ Annie Simon in her great emotional portrayal of “Kiite Med-' laud” Little Mamie Simon in her lieau- t if 111 rendition Of “Arthur Sidney Frank P Lindoii in liis powerful and unparalleled impersonation of “Gilliei-t Medland” aiul not least Frank Eller- slie in his great character “Matthew ThomtoW-fiat treaclierons friend- ably siqiportrd by the entire company This play is entirely new having been written expressly for Mr Simon and Jrom the easy droll exquisite and matchless manner lie masters liis great favorite character we would presume that Simon was moulded for it V e are not acquainted enough witli dramatic laudathms to express our delight and tlie public’s in tlie rendition of “Solomon Isaacs” on Tuesday evening last Simon has developed himself a star— a great comic star — of no mean magnitude and his effort on this occasion lias won for himself an unenviable place in tlie- estimation of the comedy-loving people of Shullsburg We cannot ' refrain commending tlie grand street parade of tlie Hussar Band and tlie superb orchestra under tlie leadership of Clias A Herb which are attractive features of the company Wednesday evening was “Ticket of Leave Man” and this Thursday evening “Milas or the Idol of the Red Mountain” During tlie ' remainder of the week we hope to see the Opera House well filled as this company is highly worthy of a liberal patronage or P l
