Body found in canal identified News-Press staff A murder victim found floating Sunday in a North Fort Myers canal was identified Tuesday as transient Jack Bernard Parker. Parker, 72, had no permanent address, although he has lived in North Fort Myers, Lee sheriff's Capt. Rod Shoap said. He said Parker has a wife and child who live in Lee County, but he declined to elaborate about the family. Detectives learned Parker's identity by showing PARKER his picture to transients and store owners near the canal where Parker was found. Despite his family, Parker is considered a transient, Shoap said. An autopsy Monday revealed that Parker drowned. Shoap said Parker suffered a blow to the head and a couple of minor stab wounds to the body, and could have been unconscious when he hit the water. At 9:58 a.m. Sunday, deputies were told there was a body inside a tire in a ditch behind the Hancock Bridge Square shopping center on U.S. 41 in North Fort Myers. Parker's death was ruled a murder by detectives who found signs of a struggle near the canal and drag marks that they think were made as Parker's killer took him to the canal, Shoap said. Detectives are continuing to investigate.
