Feb. 23 Sen sational John Borican set new record of 2:14.3 in the feature 1,000 - yard invitation race In Seton HaU meet Newark Armory, Monday night, when he beat Cunningham, Venxke, Boark and Slater in a magnificent run in which Borican led all the way save for an instant in the last lap when Slater passed him but was immediately passed in turn by Borican. Borican said, "race was not hard save for last lap, and he thinks lie has not yet really done his best In 1,000." A huge audience cheered his victory. Eulace Peacock and Herbert Thompson, the latter handicapped by s bad start, lost out in final of 60 - yard handicap. Daniel Carney of New York University Athletic Association won 300 - yard handicap. GORDON AND AM MEET NEW YORK, Feb. 23 - The cream of the nation's track stars convene here next Saturday night for the 51st annual national championships of the Amateur Athletic Union with at least four sepia champions expected to add new laurels to their already brilliant records on the historic Madison Square Garden track. Leading the brigade of sepia aces will be John Borican, who' is destined to become one of the nation's "greatest track stars this year. Borican is listed for a number of events in Saturday night's meet, but will be watched closely in the 1,000 meter run. In this race Borican will be matched with such nationally known stars as Charlie Beetham, Ross Bush, San - ford Goldberg, Howie Borck, and a number of other crack performers. Other sepia star slated for the meet are: Lloyd Thompson,' high - jump star and Ed. Gordon, 1932 Olympic broad jump star.
