Computer To Score Olympics Squaw Valley, Calif. An electronic computer capable of printing results in English and French just seconds after an event will make scoring in the 1960 Olympic Winter Games the fastest in history. Prentis C. Hale, Olympic Games Organizing committee president, revealed Saturday thae International Business Machines corporation has agreed to furnish, without charge, the computer and necessary operating personnel during the period of the February 18-28, 1960 classic. Hale emphasized that com putation of Olympic events requires "the most complex scoring procedures involved in any athletic event." The computer will be an IBM 305 RAMAC, developed and manufactured at the company's San Jose, Calif., plant. An unique feature of RAMAC consists of a large memory file of magnetic disks. The file can hold 5,000,000 informational characters, any of which can be made available within a second. The computer derives its name from the words "random access method of accounting and control." Results Immediately , Hale noted that final plac-ings in previous Winter Olympics have often been unavailable for as long as five hours after an event because of involved manual calculations. "IBM's RAMAC will make it possible to compute most of the results within two minutes after a finish and make the results immediately available," Hale continued. Preliminary planning by IBM personnel include a detailed six-month study of winter sports events scoring procedures with the subsequent development of programs for IBM equipment. In addition to score computations, RAMAC's huge memory file will contain biographical and past-performance information on every competitor, including a 200-word biography with an additional 200-word brief of past and current performances. Reply Within Seconds Whenever information Is desired on a competitor, RAMAC's memory file will be "queried" and the reply will be automatically printed within seconds. The questioner may specify his answer be in French, the official language of the Olympics, or in Enjglish-the alternate language. Events to be scored by RAMAC include speed skating, figure skating and all ski events - slaloms, downhills, cross-country races and jump ing. Hale pointed out that scor ing has always been necessarily slow for such competitions as figure skating, Nordic combined events and jumping because of the complex formulas necessary to convert performances into scoring points. By utilizing RAMAC, results of these events will be avail able less than two minutes after the final competitor finishes. The IBM RAMAC was de veloped to handle business transactions flowing through an office or factory. Many large supermarket chains em ploy it to assure full shelves without overstocking.
