Osborne - Three quarters a spectator on the Nebraska sideline, Garcia ended his Nebraska career in storybook fashion by coming off the bench to replace the injured Tom Sorley and to quarterback the Huskers to victory. Garcia was red hot when he got ! his chance. Throwing just three passes in the final, frantic period, he hit on all three, two of them for touchdowns. The first was a 10-yard pitch to wingback Curtis Craig, who made a twisting, diving stab in drawing Nebraska closer at 17-14 with 10:51 remaining. "I wasn't sure if Curtis had his eye on the ball so I waited and then ended up throwing a bit behind him," Garcia said of the score which saw him execute a nifty fake to the Nebraska -back which drew in the Tar Heel secondary. "It wasn't as tough of a catch as it might have looked," Craig said. "I was so wide open because the safety fell down and bumped the monster, who was supposed to cover me." Nebraska defensive tackle George / Andrews, whose 19 tackles earned him most valuable defensive player honors, said, "Barney's interception was the key to this win, no doubt about it." While Cotton's turnover unlocked the door, Nebraska defensive tackle ! Dan Pensick's fumble recovery slammed the gates on North Carolina as it set up the Garcia to Smith winning pass. The ball finally ended up on the Nebraska 43, where Garcia reached into his bag of passing tricks and fakes : and performed his magic for the second time. After three running plays, Garcia faked a handoff, spotted S Smith streaking across the middle of the field and hit him with score that completed the comeback. "I thought it was on the money all the way," said Garcia, whose clutch fireman's job earned him offensive player honors. "But then I heard the crowd groan for a second and I wasn't sure. Then I heard the cheers and I knew." Reconstructing the play, Garcia said, "I was looking for the tight end first. But when I didn't see him (Ken Spaeth), I looked for Tim. I've been accused of holding the ball too long before, so I wasn't about to hold it too long this time." Asked about his victory catch, Smith said, "I think the play action fake to the back was the key. "Curtis (Craig) ran a streak and I ran under the coverage and I could tell right away I was wide open.' As he cut across the middle of the field where Garcia drilled him a moment before being sacked, Smith said he was thinking, "just dig as hard as you can and don't look back." If he would have glanced back over his shoulder, he would have seen a jubilant Garcia pumping his fist high in the air in victory while jumping for joy. "This is just super," said Garcia, his voice cracking. "I've been sick all week and my voice was going on me out there tonight. The guys couldn't hear me call signals half the time.' Asked by one reporter how it felt for a great quarterback to go out in such a great way, Garcia, who has suffered many ups and downs in his final Husker season said, "I don't know how great I *am, but I can tell you, this win is great." Emotion has a way of producing such greatness. - From page 19
