Suspect: Hit-and-run was an accident By QISELLB GOODMAN Journal Tribune Staff Writer BIDDEFORD — The Lyman man -'charged with killing his live-in girlfriend says he accidentally ran ha over with his van after they had an argument Tuesday night “It was an accident” Raymond Wood told reporters as he was hustled away by sheriffs deputies Friday afternoon at Maine District Court “I didn’t know (until) the next day what had happened” Prosecutors say Wood 37 deliberately 'intended to kill 41-year-old Bessie Selek when he ran her “over with a 1987 Ford van about 9:30 Tuesday evening on Route 202 in Waterboro The Maine Attorney General’s Office on Friday upgraded to murder the manslaughter charge that had been initially lodged against Wood “Our review of die circumstances seemed to indicate that the appropriate charge was murder We felt it was more appropriate to be charged as an intentional doing” said Assistant Attorney General Lisa Muchese Wood who has not entered a plea to the murder charge was returned to the York County Jail in Alfred where he is being held without bail His lawyer Joseph Wrobleski declined to comment The hit-and-run accident ended a relationship marked by vjjplence so regular and routine that co-workers suspected Selek was the victim when she failed to repent to work the morning after the accident hit the news “Clearly this is a couple with a history of domestic violence” Matchese said Marchese said she is discouraged “that we’re seeing so many cases of domestic violence” “There is a concern by everyone about the statistics” she said Wood entered an innocent plea Friday to an Aug 28 assault charge involving Selek “There was some conflict involved prior to the incident” said Maine State Police Sgt Matthew Stewart Wood changed his story and admitted to driving the van that struck Selek after police confronted him and told him they took MURDER Continued on Page A1 0 -
