Raymond Wood is free and so is Bessie Selek’s killer By GISELLE QOODMAN Journal Tribune Staff Writer ALFRED — Raymond Wood the man accused of running over his girlfriend with a van a year ago in Wataboro is free today after the state dropped murder charges against him Monday The state said it did not have enough evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt after a York County Superior Court judge last month suppressed ifftwiminating testimony made by Wood to police the day of his arrest Wood’s attorney Joseph Wrobleski said that ruling was the turning point in the case “The significant victory was winning the suppression hearing” he said Monday evening “It hastened die inevitable Inevitably he would have been cleared by the jury” Wood' was scheduled for a dismissal hearing Wednesday in York County Superior Court for which Wrobleski was preparing Monday afternoon when he received word the state had dropped the charges Assistant Attorney General Andrew Benson could not be readied for comment Wood has been held at the York County Jail without bail for a year after he was indicted for murder in the April 20 1999 death of Bessie Selek Selek 47 and Wood 57 lived together and had a history of domestic violence against each other Police claimed Wood ran Selek over with his van while she I MURDER Continued on Page 10
