HE DOWNPLAYS HIS HOT START Lemon's style unchanged By TOMMY GEORGE . Free Press Sports Writer Chet Lemon is like most of the Tigers. In Detroit's 1 1-2 victory over Boston on Tuesday night, the guy clobbered two homers, drove in four runs, scored twice, raised his average 17 points to .350 and flawlessly played center field. But all he wanted to talk about was the victory, the Tigers' 19th in 21 games. "The guys really played well tonight," was the first thing Lemon said afterward, "and the main thing is we got another win." Yeah, yeah, Chet, what about the two homers? "We have such a talented club. I've played on teams that had 11-, 12-game winning streaks, but I've never been involved in anything like this." OK, fine, Chet, what about another night of good defense in center? "You know, we realize we haven't won anything yet. We're just going out there and putting our best on the line, and so far we've been very fortunate. The reason I've gotten off to a good start is because of this team. There's so much talent, that it makes you play well." FINALLY, LEMON got around to talking about his contributions, but only before emphasizing that the team and winning come first. He believes his teammates think the same way, and that's why, he says, the Tigers are beating up on their opponents. "I never go up there thinking about hitting a home run," he said, "and on both homers I was just trying to make contact. The first one was off a fastball, the second a change. He (Boston reliever Dennis Boyd) had a good breaking ball and a good live arm, and he's a very talented young man. I got the breaks and a good swing. I could have easily grounded to short both times." But Lemon didn't, and the cushion he provided helped Milt Wilcox coast to his third victory against no losses. And Lemon remained hot offensively he has 28 hits, 20 RBIs and six home runs. He says slow starts have been characteristic of his big-league career since he joined the White Sox in 1976 for his first full season. Known for his glove, Lemon always has packed a wallop with the bat. He hit 24 homers last year, and this season thinks he'll get more. "Last year I sacrificed my average for power, but this year maybe I can enjoy both," he said. "I've been a notorious slow starter, especially in April Decause oi me com weauiw, But 1 hope tnis gooa sian worns iur a swung ihumi.
