Trammell moves up to lead oil By BRIAN BRAGG Free Press Sports Wriler BOSTON Manager Sparky Anderson made a major lineup switch Monday as the faltering Tigers entered an important three-game series against the Red Sox. Anderson installed shortstop Alan Trammell as the, leadoff hitter and dropped slumping right fielder Chet Lemon to the seventh spot. Until Monday, Lemon had led off in every game he had started this season. "Chester is pressing too much," said the manager. "I'm going to get him in a new spot and see if that won't change things for him. And Alan is starting to hit the ball a little better now, so maybe getting him in there leading off will help him a little bit, too. "We'll stay with it here and just see how it goes," he said. BOTH PLAYERS said they were happy with the switch. "I'm elated," said Lemon. "I'm happy the skipper made the change. I think he was aware that I might not . . . well, you know, I told you in spring training I didn't think I was a leadoff hitter. "I'll do anything I can to help the ball club but you don't have much choice when you're hitting .230," he added with a smile. Lemon was batting .234 going into Monday's game, and he had driven in just 14 runs. TRAMMELL SAID he appreciated the confidence Anderson showed by putting him in the No. 1 spot in the lineup. "This whole year has been mental for me that's what this game is all about, anyway and this might give me the confidence I need," he said. "I've been hitting the ball harder the last week or so, and this might get me a few more at-bats and I might sneak an extra hit or two in there. I don't know how long it'll last you never know with Sparky but it might help me help the team, which is the most important thing." Trammell was the Tigers' leadoff man for a few weeks near the end of the 1981 season, and led off most of his amateur career. "It's nothing new to me," he said. "It doesn't bother me. I just hope I do better this time than I did last Sep tember, because then I was going through one of those (slumps) and wasn t in the groove at all.
