Isaac Knapper, 16, was accused in the April 12 shooting of Ronald Banks, 45, of Brewer, Maine. Police said another suspect also was being sought. Banks, killed while attending a conference of historians in New Orleans, played a key role in Maine's Indian land claims case which is about to be settled. He was the key historian in the case while Maine Gov. Joseph E. Brennan served as attorney general. Professor John W. Hakola and Banks were returning to the Hyatt Regency Hotel, nest to the Superdome, after dinner in a French Quarter restuarant when the incident occurred. Three other University of Maine at Orono professors and Banks were in New Orleans attending a meeting of the Organization of American Historians. Banks, lived with his wife and four children in Brewer, was born in Camden and graduated from Gorham State College. He held a masters and doctorate degrees from UMO and was of Arts of Sciences; Maine chairman of the Bicentennial Commission; ; a member of the Governor's Task Force on Governmental Reorganization, and a member of the Maine Educational Council on Indian Education. A funeral service was held April 17 at UMO and was attended by about 400 persons, included Brennan and former Maine Gov. James B. Longley, Student Killed After Being Hit By School Bus DENHAM SPRINGS, La. (UPI) A 7-year-old girl was struck and killed in front of her home by the bus which brought her from school, authorities said. Shelly Ann Daniel, a student at Freshwater Elementary School, was killed Tuesday afternoon when she stepped in front of the bus, said Livingston Parish Sheriff Odom Graves. No charges were filed against bus driver Elsie Redden.
