Bill to Outlaw Meyer Lemon Trees Sent Back to Committee SACRAMENTO (UP) The author of a bill which would outlaw Meyer lemon trees in cer• tain districts of California ran into a solid wall of opposition in the Assembly Thursday and sent the bill back to committee. Assemblyman H. W. Kelly (R- Shafter) was the author. Kelly and other proponents said scientists had traced the citrus disease of quick decline to the Meyer lemon tree and this bill was necessary to keep the deadly virus from spreading to cit• rus orchards north of the Te. hachapi. Assemblyman Patrick D. Me. Gee (R- Nuys) called it "one of the most dangerous bills" he had ever read. McGee said it provided the director of agriculture "to go into your home or into any nursery in the state and order the destruction of Meyer lemon trees." McGee said there would be no recourse in the courts and no reimbursement for losses of owners of the trees. He said the tree, an ornamental rather than commercial variety of lemon. had not been proved definitely as the host of quick decline virus. McGee proposed amendments which would weaken the bill. providing for court recourse by owners of the trees as well as reimbursement. The Assembly voted 48 to 14 to accept the amendments. Kelly then asked that the bill be sent back to committee for further study. L. A. Avocado Local•San Diego 13 lb flats 7.75, loose per lb Prices County fuertes 12• 24-27 lb lugs 7.25• 25-30 cents.
