"Gentleman Set in the Gay Nineties when San Francisco's nouveau riche enthusiastically sponsored men of the sports world, this Warner Bros. production is elaborate and rowdy, spasmodically active. However, "Gentleman Jim" both dramatic and amusing and will be particularly interesting to those who remember him and to those who would like to know about the first great boxer who relied upon brain and skill to overcome brawn. The picture takes Corbett from the time he crashes the snooty Olympic Club in San Francisco through his successive victories over small - time and prominent fighters on through his glorious defeat of John L. Sullivan, the champ himself. Corbett practically makes himself a member of the club and the members endure him only because he wins for them. This conceited son of a livery stable owner and member of a rough Irish family is so obnoxious to the Olympic's elite that they, including Victoria Ware, do everything but pray for his downfaN. But Corbett, aware of their attitude, goes serenely on to his social and professional triumph. And they don't forgive him until the slight, brainy fighter with the dancing legs beats Sullivan. There's Romance, Too. A few liberties have been taken with Corbett's real story, but only sticklers will object to that. Jim is left telling Vicki Ware, the girl with whom he has been fighting all along, what a fine Corbett she will make. The only wife we know of Corbett ever having is Vera Taylor Corbett. "Gentleman Jim" was directed is?by Raoul Walsh from the screen play by Vincent Lawrence and Horace McCoy. A long list of expert character players complete the cast, all of whom do their bits exceptionally well. "Gentleman Jim" should find a lot of old friends and make a lot of new ones. * ½* The quickest, easiest way to dismiss Joe E. Brown's new picture is to say that if he is one of your favorite comedians, you may get a few laughs at his antics in "Daring Young Man." There were those. waiting at the Brooklyn Paramount for Bette Davis' "Now Voyager" to go on the screen, who thought he was funny but were not among that minority. Not to be outdone by Hugh Herbert, who never plays less than four roles in his own comedies, Brown doubles up in his latest picture. He plays Jonathan Peckinpaw and Grandmother Peckinpaw. While Jonathan is a serious, modest, studious young man, Grama is a salty old girl who thinks her grandson is somewhat of a drip. Enter the Spies! In the long run, Jonathan shows Granda that he is worthy of his illustrious Peckinpaw ancestors. Assisting the star are Marguerite Chapman, William Wright, Roger Clark, Claire Dodd, Lloyd Bridges and Don Douglas. If Joe E. intends going on forever, he had better select something less painfully silly than his current vehicle. Cobina Gaining Columbus, Ga., Nov. 25 (AP).Cobina Wright, film actress who was stricken with pneumonia while on a visit here, was reported recovering today and is expected to leave the hospital within the next few days. Dramatic and Amusing. Adequate portrayals by the star and his leading lady, Alexis Smith, and particularly amusing performances by William Frawley, Jack Carson and Alan Hale, are a great help to the picture's general entertainment value. But elimination of situations unnecessary to the drama of the lowly Irish boy whose ambition and ability carried him to world recognition would have acI celerated the action.
