'Texas Midwest I Brown County Murdered man found near vehicle in flames By JIM LOOBY Correspondent BROWNWOOD The body of a Brown County man who had been shot in the back of the head was discovered next to his burning vehicle early Friday morning. Firemen and sheriff's deputies were called to the scene of a burning vehicle on Farm Road 2126 about five miles south of Brownwood and discovered the body of Juan Leon Laureles, 29, several feet from the vehicle. Laureles had been shot in the back of the head and had no burns on him, said Chief Deputy Glen Smith. Two motorists made 911 calls reporting 1 the fire, said Lt. Scott Martin with the sheriff's department. The second caller reported Laureles' body near the vehicle. "The caller spotted the body approximately 20 feet in front of the vehicle," Martin said, adding authorities are continuing to question friends and family for any leads. Laureles left his home on U.S. Highway 67/84 west of Brownwood about 11:30 p.m., according to reports. He was scheduled to report to work at Kroger at midnight but didn't arrive at the store. Martin said no motive has been established. The sheriff's department is investigating the report of a red pickup truck that was spotted near the scene prior to the incident. The truck possibly is a one-ton model with no bed. Laureles' body was sent to the Travis County Medical Examiners Office for autopsy. For home delivery, call 673-4284. Abilene Reporter-News
