Coach Bob LaPointe remembers taking over a Belleville football program that was, quite honestly, not that good. The players were embarrassed to wear their jerseys in the school on game days. "When we got here this program had never won more than five games in a season since 1958," said LaPointe, who led the Tigers (10-1, 7-0) to their second straight Mega Red title. The Tigers lost in the regional final to Monroe, 25-6.

"This season was important for a lot of reasons," LaPointe said. "To see the school and community get excited about their football team was a tremendous lift for us," The Tigers beat rival Dearborn Fordson, 14-13, on their own field for the first time in school history. "We blocked an extra point and a field goal attempt," LaPointe said. "Fordson just marched down the field twice, but we stopped them. In years past we would have folded up our tents.

But these kids played with pride. "They had great community support and it was wonderful to see everyone rally around this football team." By Ml L. for? Friendship. That's the first thing that conies to mind when Ian Gold thinks about his senior season at Belleville. "Friends that I've made here is the thing that sticks out the most," said Gold, the Free Press' 1995 All-Western Wayne offensive player of the year.

"This year we were really determined to try going undefeated, winning our league and making it to the Silverdome. "We made two out of three, but it wasn't satisfying enough." Gold is an explosive runner, who at times simply bolts out of the backfield. He rushed for 950 yards and 21 touchdowns, helped the Tigers go undefeated and capture its second consecutive Mega Red Conference championship. "A lot of us are friends, especially between all of us backs," he said. "Nate Lewis, Mike Williams, Rodney Komarami and Joe Manuel are all real close friends.

It helps when you know that when' you go back to the huddle that you have guys like that that support you. "We're friends for life." Gold has verbally committed to attend Michigan. "I've had a fun experience here," Gold said. "But I've been to four Michigan games this year and the thing that excites me the most is watching those guys run through that tunnel and CLASS: Junior.
