LAKE JACKSON Elementary school students from Lake Jackson took the lion's share of winnings in the Texas General Land Office's environmental poster contest, according to Commissioner Garry Mauro. Jennifer Vanscoy and Robert Michie, O.M. Roberts students, took first and third place, respectively, in their age category, and Lisa Hai Thang of Bess Brannen Elementary took second place in the upper division category. The "Get a Line on Litter" poster contest, designed to help educate children about the importance of the Gulf of Mexico, was highly successful in focusing public attention on the problem of marine debris and litter on Texas beaches, Mauro said. "All of the poster art displayed a remarkable sensitivity to the problems faced by the Gulf of Mexico," Mauro said.

"It's evident that all contestants devoted a lot of thought, time and creative energy to their projects, and every entry had unique appeal. These kids are the future of Texas and the world." The contest, which drew more than 250 entries from around the state, had two categories 5-9 years old and 10-15 years old. Vanscoy, 8, first-place winner in the 5-9 age category, won an ecological book Habitats and third-place winner Michie, 8, won Earth Search: A Kid's Geography Museum in a Book. Second place in the lower age category was won -by Frankie Munoz of Brownsville's Yturria Elementary. He was awarded How the Environment Works, the same prize going to Hai Thang, 10, who took second in the upper division.

The poster contest ran in conjunction with the ninth annual Texas Coastal Cleanup, a twice- annual coast-wide beach cleanup sponsored by the GLO's Adopt- A-Beach program, held in December.
