New Braunfoto WadntKtoy, March 23, 1963 Oratorians These Canyon Middle School students did some fast talking at the New Braunfels Optimists' Oratorical Contest on March 14. Maurisa Young, at center, placed first and will go on to zone competition at the Windcrest Golf Course on April 13. Kitty Van Horn, right, was named first runner-up, and Heather Way won second place. Valiant fight Christopher Erben needs help to battle blood disease Christopher Erben, age 10, would like to lead a normal life. But a complicated- sounding disease with a mile-long name is making it difficult.

Erben, a student at Seele School, suffers from idopathic thrombocytopenic pur- pura, or ITP. That's a mouthful, but what it means is he could bleed to death from a cut or a nosebleed. Fighting this disease has been an expensive proposition, as his mother, Lanette, faces over $10,000 in medical bills. And since Christopher has been making weekly visits to Santa Rosa Children's Hospital to receive treatments of an experimental drug, that total can only go higher. To help defray the costs, a trust fund has been established at First Federal Savings and Loan in the name of Christopher, Lanette, and the boy's aunt, Joni Parker.

Bascally, Erben's problem is that he doesn't have enough platelets in his blood, and his doctors don't know why. Platelets are the blood's clotting agents, and a healthy person usually has a platelet count of 300,000 or more. Erben's count has dropped to as low as 1,000. Removing the spleen often helps restore that and Erben's spleen was removed in January. This measure has not helped as much as expected, and there's still another problem.

In addition to the three treatments, Erben has also been on a steroid, which has a side effect it makes the recipient appear swollen. Despite all his medical woes, Erben's morale is still high, Parker said. In addition to medical problems, there are money problems. Mrs. Erben's husband, Steve, has been laid off his job, and the couple has two younger boys, ages seven and six, to take care of in addition to Christopher.

Persons wishing to make a contribution to the Christopher Erben Fund may do so through any of the tellers at First Federal Savings and Loan. Programs reducing state farm acreage DALLAS (AP) Federal acreage reduction programs will remove about 9 million acres of Texas farm land from production this year, officials say. More than 60 percent of Texas' 200,000 farms are enrolled in the federal programs, including President Reagan's payment-in-kind plan, U.S. Agriculture Department officials said Tuesday. In Texas, an estimated 89.6 percent of rice farms were enrolled in PIK and other'' acreage reduction programs, meaning some 285,000 acress will be idled this year.

The USDA said 85.8 percent of Texas cotton farms signed up for 3.5 million acres of idle land more than half the nationwide total of 6.8 million cotton acres to be left idle. A statewide total of 71.8 percent of all wheat farms, or 3 million acres, will be left implanted, and 62 percent of corn and sorghum farmland, or 2.4 million acres, will be set aside.
