And so the Masters hit the halfway mark in the rain, mixing the deep satisfaction of the leaders and the misery of first-round leader Mike Donald, whose first Masters dream was shattered. Twenty-four hours after he nearly wept with joy after a 64, he slumped away in the darkness with an 82.

Among those who missed the kidding? I'm going to play this week at the Masters. Thirty million people would die to be in my shoes." So Augusta took its toll. The years can be take their toll, too. Who could measure the delight of Floyd and Nicklaus? "I'm toying with 'em right now," Floyd said after a four-un-der par 68 put him at 6-under 138. He won the U.S.

"It's even tougher than my first wife." Among Donald's misfortunes was a triple bogey on No.18, when he pushed his drive right, into a drainage hole where it disappeared. It was ruled a water hazard, meaning a penalty, a bad ending to an awful day. "I went down the drain in more ways than one," Donald said. "But heartbroken? Are you odgers win Freeway opener. By MIKE TERRY Sun Sports Writer ft i i If ANAHEIM It was a week late, but the Angels-Dodgers Freeway Series opener still had all the trappings of Southern California evening fare.

Paper airplanes crash-landing in right field. Beachballs bounding from section to section. Wave after wave from the sea of fans spread out through Anaheim Stadium. And don't forget the mass exodus after the seventh inning. Those who bothered to check out the baseball game and there must have been some among the announced crowd of 47,555 saw Los Angeles use a three-run seventh to over SHAKIN' THE STICK: A moderate earthquake hit Candlestick Park in San Francisco during Friday night's A's-Gi-ants exhibition game.

Spirit starts season on top, 3-2 come California 5-4. They also witnessed the home debut of Mike Smithson, one of the key offseason relief acquisitions made by the Angels. And it wasn't pretty. Smithson was asked to protect a 4-2 lead left him by Chuck Finley and Willie Fraser.

He began by hitting Jeff Hamilton. Then came a flair double to right by Alfredo Griffin, an infield single by Juan Samuel, a bunt single by Willie Randolph (actually a safety squeeze that Johnny Ray fell down while trying to field), and a pop-fly dunker by Hubie Brooks that fell at the feet of Claudell Washington in right. "I was lucky," Brooks said. It was like being nibbled to death by ducks. But the bill was very high.

"The biggest play was hitting the leadoff guy. That got them going," Smithson said. "There was nothing I could do after that. "I've only had three innings all spring, and would like more time, but that's no excuse." A final indignity was watching Don Aase an Angel from 1978-84, now with the Dodgers as a non-roster player amble out of the bullpen in the eighth to kill off two California rallys. "It was the sharpest he's been this spring," L.A.

See DODGERSC4 By KALRUCKER Sun Sports Writer AUGUSTA, Ga. On a gloomy Friday at Augusta, memories were in the air: those trying to be rekindled and those trying to be forgotten. Ray Floyd, 47 years old, is leading the Masters after two rounds. Scott Hoch, whose one moment in the spotlight came last year when he blew an 18-inch putt to toss away a green jacket, is one shot back. Flames catch up to Kings Associated Press CALGARY, Alberta After playing poorly in the opener of their Smythe Division playoff series with the Kings, the Calgary Flames were hoping for someone to come to the forefront in Game 2.

Welcome, Doug Gilmour. "Throughout the playoffs a number of guys have to be leaders in here," said Gilmour, who had two goals and an assist in the Flames' 8-5 win over the Kings on Friday night. "A lot of guys came to the forefront tonight and played a lot better. "We've all got to come together and we all have to play hard." The Kings, who played both games in Calgary without superstar Wayne Gretzky, still are happy to return home with a split in the series. They won the opener 5-3.

Game 3 is scheduled for Sunday night at the Forum and Gretzky, hindered by a back injury, is expected to play. Joe Nieuwendynk had a goal and two assists while Sergei Ma-karov had three assists for Calgary. Joey Mullen, Gary Roberts, Joel Otto, Dana Murzyn and Jim Korn also scored for the Flames, who outshot Los Angeles 38-26. The Kings' Todd Elik said Calgary made some changes in its game plan and Los Angeles didn't adjust. "They came out strong and got a couple of quick goals," Elik said.

"They did their homework, went through the game film and corrected little things. Luc Robitaille led the Kings with a pair of goals, one on the power play. Magic Johnson had 22 points and 10 assists for the Lakers, who beat the Suns for the third time in four meetings this season. Tom Chambers led Phoenix with 25 points, but had only eight in the second half.

Kevin Johnson had 24 points for the Suns, who lost at home to a Pacific Division opponent for the first time this season. After Kevin Johnson's layup put Phoenix ahead 55-54 in the third quarter, the Lakers went on an 18-4 run. Worthy scored seven points during the spurt, which gave Los Angeles a 72-59 lead. The Lakers led 88-80 with 6:26 left after consecutive jumpers by Byron Scott, who finished with 14 points. Phoenix closed to 97-95 on Eddie Johnson's free throws with 1:05 to play before Worthy hit two foul shots with 29 seconds left and two more with four seconds remaining for the final margin.

The Lakers, trailing 48-42, rallied to take a 50-49 halftime lead on Larry Drew's three-pointer with 23 seconds left and Worthy's baseline jumper at the See LAKERSC4 i third. Two subsequent ground balls scored both runners. Then Spirit right-hander Scott Taylor settled down. After giving up a walk to Terry Carr in the first, he retired nine batters in a row before Beban Perez doubled in the fourth. It was hit and miss for the offense in the early going.

WmIV UPDATE Valvano would coach for $1 RALEIGH, N.C.

(AP) Jim Valvano volunteered Friday to coach North Carolina State's basketball team for $1 next year, but the university refused the offer, Valvano's attorneys said. "Coach made an offer earlier today to tear up his current contract and remain at the university for a year," attorney Palmer Sugg said. "That offer was rejected. We are back to negotiating a monetary settlement." Though Valvano has not been implicated in any wrongdoing, he has been under pressure to resign since State was placed on two years probation. Nobody has to tell Jerry O'Hara's thighs that. Ever since O'Hara muscled his way onto the California Emperors the Inland Empire's expansion Western Soccer League franchise he's run into some major-league soreness. "It makes you feel old sometimes because you're so tired," said the 23-year-old graduate of Fontana High School. "You walk around. You bend down.

You hear your bones crackling." For a few weeks, the Emperors have held daily three- to four-hour practices. The running, cutting, starting and stopping can take its toll on the legs, especially when someone has the thighs the size of O'Hara's. "He's a strong guy in both legs," said Emperors coach Rildo Menezes. "He's a very hard kicker. You look at him, you might think he's slow because he is so big, but initially I was impressed with how fast he can break deep.

He's dangerous." An army might travel on its stomach, but O'Hara goes to war with his legs. Twenty-four inches around, they are his meal ticket as a forward. "I use my size to my advantage," O'Hara said. In a sport known for light, quick, small bodies, O'Hara stands out at 6-foot, 195 pounds. "My main job is getting myself dug inside the (penalty) box, ready to finish," he said.

"That's what every team needs. I respect what all the other guys can do. They can dribble much better than I can. A lot of them are faster I think my skill is finishing goals, scoring. "It's easy for me when I get into the box to use my body and move people out of the way.
