a via cAvuaca IU1 tier. You've hinted. You've kept your mouth shut. What you can't do anymore is allow this co-worker's poor job performance to undermine yours. What can you do if a coworker's laziness, procrastination, inefficiency, or lack of focus, dedication or skills is making it impossible for you to do your job properly? First, separate what's important about her behavior and what's not and your ONLY criterion should be: "does this specific bvehavior stop me from doing my job properly? If what drives you crazy' is that she chews gum or bites her fingernails, for example, this is your problem not hers.

If she constantly loses phone messages, memos and other paperwork, thus making it impossible for you to stay in touch with clients or complete important projects, it's her problem. If your colleague spends a lot of time on the phone for personal business, this is her business or her boss's. If she ties up the only office phone line, or you spend half your days taking phone messages from her boyfriend, you have a legitimate complaint. If your co-worker is naturally messy and you're naturally neat, her messiness is none of your business. But if she continually misplaces items you need to com plete your work, her lack of organization is your business.

Employers dread petty personality clashes between employees, and we women still have an unfortunate reputation to overcome in this area. Fair or not, we're still perceived by many males as being inclined toward back-biting and pettiness when we work with other women. So even if your problems with a co-worker are strictly professional, you'll need to carefully document your case and present it to your colleague in a manner 1.1 a. 1- t-P 1 inai siraignuorwara, ODjecuve and very much to the point. Be sure to discuss the problem openly with her! Before you talk to her, make sure you're clear about your goal. Is it to make her feel bad, or get ner cnange ner ways: is 10 change her attitude (you can't), or change her behavior? All pass Opening lead: Bridge Card-perfect defense By Phillip Alder Giorgio Belladonna died of lung cancer in his home city of Rome on Friday, May 12. As we won't be seeing any more great play from the Italian superstar, I want to show you one of his best-ever defensive performances.

The deal occurred during Italy's march to the 1967 European Championship in Dublin. (Belladonna won 10 European titles.) The penalty double of two clubs was aggressive, but at least Belladonna wasn't doubling South into game. After winning the first trick with the heart queen, Belladonna, wanting to reach his partner's hand, switched to the diamond three. Knowing from the low card that his partner had an honor in the suit, East put up his king. Then he cashed the ace and king of hearts, on which Belladonna discarded the nine and ace of diamonds! With four tricks in, the defense needed two trump tricks.

East continued with a low diamond, South ruffing with the club nine. Instead of overruffing, Belladonna discarded a low spade. Now South couldn't avoid losing two club tricks. If he led a low trump toward dummy's jack, West would go in with the queen and return a spade, stranding declarer in the dummy. Note that if Belladonna either hadn't discarded his diamonds or had overruffed with the club queen, declarer would have made his contract.

Afterwards, with a wide grin on his face, Belladonna probably said, "I wouldn't have doubled without the club eight." The main point, though, is that it is usually right not to overruff with a trump trick that cannot run away; keep your trump holding intact. 1995 by NBA Inc. Astrograph Wednesday. July 12. 1995 Although you may prefer independence in the year ahead, much you hope to do will require the support of others.

From this day start developing helpful alliances. CANCER (June 21 -July 22) If too much emphasis is placed on your independence today, you may fail to cooperate with others in ways that could be mutually advantageous. Avoid tripping over your own feet. I LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You will need to plan if you hope to be truly productive today.

If you don't know where you're going and attempt to do too much, everything could suffer. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Although you are usually your own person, you may yield to peer pressure today and do something against your better judgment. LIBRA (Sept.

23-Oct. 23) Analyze situations realistically today. If you underestimate your opposition, you might come out as just a competitor instead of as a winner. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov.

22) An individual who thinks he or she is always right, but often isn't, might try to coerce you into rejecting your own ideas which might actually be better. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) You might not make a good deal today if you shop with an impulsive attitude. Desire for instant gratification can distort a person's sense of values.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) If you and your mate cannot agree on an important issue today, it might be helpful to get an objective friend, not a relative, to arbitrate the matter. AQUARIUS -(Jan. 20-Feb.

19) Lukewarm interests aren't apt to receive your earnest efforts today. To be an achiever, you will need strong motivation. PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20) If you play in a competitive, social sport today, don't try to overwhelm your opponent. If you can't play for the fun of it.

tear up the score card. ARIES (March 21 -April 19) In career situations today, beware of those who tend to use others like puppets in a marionette show. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Try not to enter into serious discussions today if you don't know your subject and hope to bluff your way through. The chances of this working are slim. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Instead of expanding your indebtedness at this time, curb your urges to spend.

This will free you from financial bondage quicker than you think. C1995byNEAInc. For your personal horoscope, lovescope, lucky number and future forecast call Astro'Tone (95c each minute). Or: "I can't meet my deadlines when your part of a project comes in late," instead of, "You're always making me late!" Or: "I need more access to our phone lines.

Would you be willing to limit your personal calls to certain times of the day?" instead of, "You're always on the phone making personal calls! Be willing to listen to her side of the issue, and to compromise. "Could you let me know ahead of time if you're going to be late with your part of a project?" "Could you halve the time you spend on the phone?" "Will you do this, if I do that?" Ask her for solutions, as well: "How can you and I work this out?" There should be no hint form you of personal animosity in this negotiation. You're just two professionals working together to solve a common problem. If your negotiations stall, you can suggest that the two of you take the matter to an objective third party, one who can help you reach an agreement a mutual acquaintance in another department, for example. If your co-worker refuses to negotiate, on the other hand, and the problems she's causing are both serious and ongoing, you may have to take this matter to your supervisor, but make sure she knows what you intend to do, and do consider inviting her to attend, as well.

This won't be easy, but if you've confronted her openly and nonaggressively, presented possible solutions to the problem and indicated your willingness to compromise, your boss and you -will know, at least, that' you aren't guilty of back-biting, pettiness, or being too immature or nonassertive to fight your own battles. 1995 NIKI SCOTT, DISTRIBUTED BY UNIVERSAL PRESS SYNDICATE 4900 Main Kansas City, Mos. 64112; (816) 932-6600 fiurchase a replacement stopper or my husband's thermos. I've looked in our stores locally and no one carries this brand. I wrote to the company at the address on the thermos: UNOVAC, Union Manufacturing Meriden, Conn.

My letter came back marked "Forwarding Order Expired." Do you know if this company still exists and, if so, where they are located? Robert D. and Nancy S. Corn, Lagro, Ind. Dear Robert and Nancy: The company is still listed in the publication "Companies and Their Brands" (Gales Publications, 1992). However, they do not list an address, so we're not sure if the company still exists.

If any of our readers know more about this, please be in touch. Stumped: Charles Pride's Sweet Potato Pie Sue Wells of Topeka, has written us a couple of times seeking this recipe. She has written the Charlie Pride Fan Club and a recipe exchange with no luck. She saw it in a feature on celebrity cooks in a women's magazine. Readers, can you help? ADAMS and NANCY NASH-CUMMINGS Dear Anne and Nan: In the early 1970s I purchased a set of dishes called "Sculptured Grape" made by Metlay Potteries in Manhattan Beach, Calif. Someone in passing told me that these dishes were not safe to use because of the lead content.

I would appreciate any information you may have on this product. Clydia Dichavy, Greenwell Springs, La. Dear Clydia: You can test your dishes yourself. We found, atom- local hardware store, a lead-testing kit. It consists of four swabs and can be used on dinner-ware, paint, toys, etc.

It costs $4.99. We bet you can find the same product or one like it at your local hardware store, too. Dear Anne and Nan: My mother -in-law and I have looked all over for something that she really wants and cannot find it is plastic shoulder covers for dresses, sweaters, etc. They just cover the shoulders of the garments that hang in the closet and this keeps them from getting dusty of yellowed. I remember my mother having some when I was a child, but we are unable to find them in our area.

Would you or your readers have any ideas about where to find them? L.M. Owen, Coquille, Ore. Dear L.M.: We found plastic shoulder covers in the Miles Kimball catalog.
