Grace Church is 148 years old and is a Christ-based and Bible-based church. The First Methodist Protestant Church was founded in 1865 meeting in homes and later a building located at 1615 Main Street under guidance of a Muncie, Indiana minister Rev James Puckett.

In1875 Mr. William Barton donated the land at 1509 South Street and the current church was built at that location at a cost of $1000.00. The church was first know as the First Methodist Protestant Church. In 1937, the name was changed to Grace Methodist Protestant Church. In 1939 the Methodist Church dropped the name Protestant and the name was changed to Grace Methodist Church.

In 1968, Grace Methodist Church became Grace United Methodist Church. Grace Church is blessed to have Rev. James Nickles as pastor to lead His people and determine, together, what His will is for the people of Grace United Methodist Church. Under the guidance of Rev. Nickles, the church is seeing new beginnings and growth.

Rev. Nickles is an Elwood native and has been in the ministry since 1983. His ministry at Grace United Methodist Church began in 2007. Due to the loyal and dedicated members and friends, many activities take place each year sponsored by the Grace UMC: The annual May Breakfast, participation hi the Elwood Community Day, a children's Back to School Carnival, the Elwood Chili Cook-Off, a Fall Bazaar, and the public Christmas Dinner and Puppet Show. The church also helps support the Elwood Food Pantry, adopts needy Elwood families at Christmas, sponsors a little girls' Softball Team and lends support to the HendersonSettlement House in Tennessee.
