Ray Berres was mentioned as one of ihpse under consideration for the important job. Berres, long associated with the Chicago White Sox, has not yet made up his mind about leaving the organization. The 51-year-old Smith, who managed at Philadelphia and Cincinnati in the late 1950s, said he felt the Tigers had "to get the pitching coordinated" and said possible better. He saw no problems in would do everything to make the pitching the hazing.

McConnell said papers could not be prepared before Thursday, and that the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service project is to end Friday. Personius had said a week ago that the service usually conducts nazing at the end of a migration, and that the success of hazing during a migration would not be known until wardens had a chance to count geese. The hazing began with the goose count at 4,000.

'ounting is to resume by Monday. It was suspended while the service's aircraft and personnel were occupied with hazing. The refuge draws about 12,300 geese during a migration. The service wanted to hold the goose population to 50,000. loser of four outfield, noting that the Tigers were blessed with "five good and figured they were solid at first base, third base and catcher.

He figures it 1 take plenty of steam for No. 1 ranked MSU to beat archrival Michigan at Spartan Stadh'm Saturday "and this game means more to us than any on our schedule." Some albert defensive plays last Saturday helped the Spar tans open their Big Ten season with a 26-10 victorv over Illinois their first victory ever at Memorial Stadium in Champaign, 111. But. said Daugherty, the offense "made mistakes where we stopped and missed MSU gained 137 yards rushing and 108 passing, but never put together a grind-it-out scor- iig drive. A pass from Jimmy Raye to Gene set up one touchdown, Al Brenner's Bip TOP record 95- yard put return scored another and the other two accounted for by fumble recoveries by Phil Hoag.

Daugherty doesn't figure he'll be able to use that fancy play in which George Chatlos knocks ffensive punch. But he had ome reservations about his ieldins. "I just don't know if shortstop McAuliffe's position," Smith aid. "We'll have to wait and ee. Maybe he could play somewhere else." Indications are the Tigers will to trade for a pitcher and ossibly a shortstop or second )aseman, depending on who is avilable and who they would lave to surrender in exchange.

Vice President and General Manager James A. Campbell announced Smith's appointment to the estimated a year job. I checked with some of the top men in the game Al Lopez, Ralph Houk and Roy Haney among them and they all praised him," Campbell said. "He's been scouting both leagues for the Yankees and we are sure this will prove a value to us, too," Campbell added. Campbell said all of the Tiger coaches dropped by the move Frank Skaff, who managed the from July 14 to the close of the season; Pat Mullin, Stub- jy Overmire and Mike Roarke would remain in the Tiger organization in some capacty.

Skaff took over the team when Bob Swift, another coach, was hospitalized with lung cancer shortly after the All-Star Game. Swift remains in critical condi- at a Detroit hospital. He took over the team in May when the late Charlie Dressen suffered a heart attack. Dressen died Aug. 10.

Smith, who lost his job in Cincinnati after 80 games in 1959 and has not managed since admitted that "once managing gets in your blood you can't get rid of it." LOS ANGFLES (AP) Don Drysdale, who has Dodger Stadium on bis side, will pitch the opening game of the World Series for Los Angeles Wednesday against Baltimore's Dave McNally, who has a telegram with 7,000 signatures on his. Drysdale's weapon, the same one that will servt Sandy Koufax and Clause Osteen, undoubtedly is more etfect ve and is one of the major reasons Los Angeles' National League champions have been established as 85 favorites over the American League champion Orioles. In five previous World Series games at Dodger Stadium, Notre Dame Continues to Gain Ground in Ratings By BEN OAN Associated Press Sports Writer Powerful Notre Dame continued to gain ground on the Koufax, Drysdale and Osteen have allowed just three runs, with each showing one shutout. The almost perfect pitching has brought the Dodgers' five victories and an unreaten Series record at home. McNally will have to match pitches with Drysdale, armed with a much 'iess effective weapon a telegram of good wishes being sent oy 7,000 of his hometown friends and admirers in Billings, Mont.

But, oddly enough, McNally got an unqualified nod from Manager Hank Bauer for the important opening game assignment while there's little doubt that Walt Alston, the Dodger manager, would have preferred to go with his 27-game winner, Sandy Koufax. "Davey has the soundest arm on the staff right now," said Bauer. "If it goes seven games, we can give three starts." While Bauer choose from a well-rested crew of starters since the Orioles clinched the AL pennant on Sept. 22, Alston's choice was dictated by the National League pennant race which didn't end until the final day of the season Sunday. Both Drysdale and Koufax second game, wito Osteen, 1714, the third Alston can juggle Koufax into three starts if the Series goes the ful' seven games by working him with two days rest in the final game just as he did in beating Minnesota last year.

Following McNally, 13-6, to the mound for the Orioles will be Jim Palmer, the Orioles' big winner at 15-10, and Wally Bunker, 10-6. But while the Dodgers have the pitchers, the Orioles have the bombers and the No. Ski Patrol To Organize Skiers interested in becoming members of the White Cap Ski Patrol will meet Sunday, Oct. 9, at 1:30 p.m. at the White Cap Ski Lodge.

Illinois gained Iti yards on two plays in which tafkle Bob Robertson, a former end, lined up on the end the line and became eligible to catch passes. Should that play be allowed in college football, Daugherty was asked. "I think it shouki be outlawed in years when we haven't got a tackle who is a former end," he joked.

But Monday was a day when the Daugherty jokes weren't as frequent. Despite its 21 7 loss to North Carolina last Saturday, Michigan has a good offense both passing and running and a good, sound defense, the MSU coach said. Michigan's Jack Clancy, he added, is as dangerous a receiver as Illinois' John Wright, who caught four passes for 114 yards including a 62 yard touchdown pass against the Spartans. He didn't add that the Ohio State game is just one week after the Michigan game. Daugherty pave the Michigan scouting report to his first stringers Monday while the reserves scrimmaged.
