The Ladies Relief Society desires to extend their thanks to Messrs. Audif- fred, D. Foster, Henderson Banney and the firm of Lynch, Malo- ney Fitzell, coal dealers, for their donations of coal to the Child ren's Home. It is to be hoped that liberal-hearted citizens will not forget to donate generously towards the Thanksgiving dinner of the little ones. What memories its recurrence awakens in the minds of people of American ancestry. Blend ing as it does tne religious witn me social, it represents with Rreat propn ety a distinctive feature of society in this country. We are a religious peo ple, but not exclusively so. We are also a social people, but oar sociability ia not divorced from religious innaence. Unlike other nations we do not isolate religion from sociability.

We com mingle them in a healthy rational way Hence the appropriateness of Thanks (riving Day wherein the roast turkey aud mince pie blend most happily with thanksgiving to Almighty God, for his crowning of the year with goodness. Gratitude and feasting are united in a wav that, as it were, ymbohzes the so ciai structure of genuine American life. Thanksgiving Day has a quenchless vitality as well as a history. It will not dissDDear as an observance until true Americanism has lost its identity in foreign amalgamation. Not until every vestige of Puritanism is expunged from the national life, will Thanksgiving Day be forgotten, or cease to be recocrnized.

It is rooted in the soil of A PATRIOTIC ANCESTRY, And it will be a difficult task to choke out its endurance by any extraneous admixture. Without obtruding on the readers of The Tribune a mild homily on the virtue of gratitude, it may, perhaps, be sufficient to say that the average individual will find good ground for thankfulness for the personal allotments of the past year. With many, experiences might have been more satisfactory, and with others they could not have been more so; wniie an utter hopeless experience during the past twelve months has fallen to the lot of but very few. If most people cannot enter upon the morrow with content ment, they can at least feel grateful that they have fared no worse thau they have, and that a hopeful outlook is theirs. In addition to the conventional repast of good things, and the public religious service, the day is also char-acterized in this State by prepared festivities and entertainments which are just as popular in the country as in the city.

Socially, Thanksgiv-ing Day has become a festive as well as feast day and a variety of social attractions are annually set apart for that time, with as much regularity as the recurrence of the day itself. The public entertainment takes the place of the family reunion on the Pacific Coast, and our Thanksgiving Day assumes the gayest of holiday attire. In this city and county the usual round of festivities will be observed. A rifle tournament by the OAKLAND LIGHT CAVALRY Will undoubtedly attract a large number of spectators, to witness the contest between the members of that crack company. The series of matches will take place at Littlefield Range from 9 to 12 o'clock to-morrow morning.

All friends of the Company are cordially invited to be present and take part in the sport. ARCHERY BY TELEGRAPH.
