Chickens cost a little more in many places, but changes in meat and poultry items generally were irregular and well scattered. Lighter shipments of snap beans Brussels sprouts, carrots, cucumbers, onions, peppers and squash made them a trifle more expensive at retail Butter and egg prices varied widely from store to store and city to city. Declines in butter at retail ranged from one to six cents a pound, and top grade eggs were off as much as eight cents in some places--with the possibility of even further cuts as storekeepers put both items high on their lists of advertised weekend specials to attract shoppers. The declines in both items were attributed chiefly to increasing production, and to resistance against the price levels of recent weeks.

Butter climbed from around 6' cents a pound at New York in. mid- September to nearly SI a pound last week before prices turned downward: Some grocery stores were even above SI. Heavier receipts of Florida oranges, grapefruit and tangerines sent their prices off sharply in most markets this week and grapefruit was featured as an advertised bargain by many stores. California navel oranges were down less. Pears, beets, cauliflower, and radishes also were slightly lower priced.

And the Agriculture Department put killards. kale, escarole. endive and spinach on. the best-buys list this week. The first plums, honeydews and cherries from Chile arrived in eastern ports this week and headed for inland markets.
