Garcia gave up only seven safeties in winning his fourth of the season. Young Earl Averill and Jim Busby homered for the Indians and Vic Wertz walloped a base- clearing double to lead the Cleveland attack. On hits alone, the Senators stayed even with the third-place Indians. But that's as far as it went. Garcia permitted only two men to reach third and was in complete command all the way The shutout was only the second suffered by Washington this sea son, but it kept them in the Ameri can League basement.

The Cincinnati Redlegs had to cut off a ninth inning rally by the Philadelphia Phillies tonight before securing an 8-2 victory. The Phillies spoiled the Reds' bid for their first shutout of the season by punching across the two runs in the last inning. Art Fowler, who went the distance for Cincinnati, limited the Phillies to five hits--three of them in the ninth inning uprising. The Redlegs tallied once in the first inning, added four runs in the sixth in which catcher Ed Bailey hit a three-run homer, and collected three more runs in the seventh. Ken Boyer blasted four Giant pitchers with a home run, two doubles and a single for five runs batted in tonight as the St.

Louis Cardinals, behind Vinegar Bend MizelT, whipped New York, 11-5. Sal who hadn't completed a game since June 22, 1955 gave up only three hits and one tonight as the Brooklyn Dodgers dropped the Milwaukee Braves from first place with a 3-0 victory. Displaying magnificent control, Maglie allowed only nine Braves' blows out of the infield, including Eddie Mathews' two singles. Invariably, Elliott's first words re: "Have you got the pole?" "That blasted pole has been the iggest headache I've had since became athletic director," says )udley. Don Bragg, Villanova's remark- ble pole vaulter, can't find a pole trong enough to carry his 195 ounds over the bar without bend- ng it into the shape of a bow. As a result, Bragg, whose 15 oot, 5V4 inch indoor vault is sec- nd only to the fabulous world ecord holder, Cornelius Warrner- am may have difficulty jualifying for the Olympics. Despite the fact that Bragg leared Saturday night -he world record is a ew NCAA outdoor mark, his per- ormance in recent months hasn't jeen up to his usually consistent ligh standards.

Moore Puts Title On Line LONDON OD--Archie Moore puts up his world light heavyweight title for the last time tonight in a fight which either opens the Sates for another heavyweight title chance or closes the books on a long and fine ring career. The aging and running-to-fat light heavy champion takes on Yolande Pompey, a hard-jawed Trinidad Negro with a weak record but plenty of hitting power. Moore admits to at least 39 years of age although some records have him two and three years older. He took a heavy beating last September in losing to Rocky Marciano in his first heavyweight title shot.

Nat Fleischer, boxing's historian and record keeper, as well as other ring officials and authorities, have said that if Moore loses he hardly will have time to regain the lost ground before very advanced fighting age puts him down for the final time. He has no rematch clause in his contract with Pompey. But, they also say, if he whips Pompey the momentum and good conditioning gained here should carry him into a world heavyweight fight in fine fettle. Moore has been fighting since 1936. On the record he has been into the ring 148 times and his record of 15 losses and only defeats by knockouts stands as one of the all-time best.

Pompey, at 27, is a little boy compared to Moore. Pompey's 35 fights include 21 knockout vic- nine by decision, one on a foul, two draws and two defeats. Two Wins For Kiwanis Nine Kiwanis inflicted double indemm- on Hal Fisher Monday, as they beat the Rotary mound both in the continuation of a washed- out game, 5-4, and in the regular Babe Ruth League contest, 6-4, at McCurdy Field. The opener was reinitiated from the fifth inning with the score tied 4-4. It had been soaked out at "that point on May 17.

Wayne Rinehart's seventh inning single after the first two batters walked decided matters. Dick Gastley who went the interrupted distance for Kiwanis consumed the win. In the afterpiece, Fisher fell into a fourth inning ambush. Kiwanis, trailing 4-2, erupted with four runs on two bits, three errors, and a walk. Until the fourth, the victors only tallies had been the result of Gastley's two-run homer.
