Caustic lye attack Son Francisco police interrogate two suspects By DONALD D. JACKSON Unittd Press International SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -An unemployed bowling alley pinset- ter and a 17-year-old youth were charged Wednesday night with the caustic Jye attack on a San Francisco delicatessen owner. Albert Benjamin Lucero, 52, seized in San Francisco, told police be paid $15 to Rudolph Hos- kms, 17, to "rough up" Harry Goldman because of jealousy over a employe' in his delicatessen. Inspector Gus Coreris said Lucero made a full confession. Goldman, 48, was blinded in one eye last Wednesday vrhen a young Negro entered his store and threw liquid lye into his eyes.

Doctors are not sure whether vision in his right eye can be restored. At City Prison, where he was booked for assault with a caustic chemical. Lucero bit his fingernails and mumbled, "all this over a woman." He said the woman was Esther Durao, a matronly clerk whom he had known for ten years. "I was mad," Lucero told police, "because Esther left me and was friendly with Goldman." Lucero told officers he had intended (hat both Goldman and Mrs. Dumo be "roughed up." He said "I didn't want them hurt bad, just slapped around, like it was a robbery, so it would be reported to police.

This would be embarrassing to them." He said he told Hoskias "be could keep what he might find in the tilL" Hoskins, who has a criminal record including a rape charge, was picked up at the home of his mother in San Diego, where he was transferred to the custody of San Francisco officers Sgt. John Fotinos and Lt. Frank Gregg. Fotinos said Hoskins tald bim he knew nothing of the assault on Goldman. "He doesn't recall when he left San Francisco, he just said he came here aboard a bus to help his mother," Fotinos In San Francisco, officers said two acquajfltaoces of Hoskins told them that the husky Hoskins bad spoken ol the attack on Goldman the day before it happened.

They said he told them, "I'm going to do this guy in. I'm going to pop his eye out." Lucero was picked up in San Francisco at about the same time Hoskins was seized in San Oiego. Police, following a tip that a man of his general description had seen in the neighborhood of Goldman's store the day of the attack, arrested him on a street comer. Coreris and Fotinos bad been baffled by the apparent senselessness ol the attack, and had issued a plea for public assistance in finding the assailant Police said that Lucero's only reason for jealousy of Goldman was that he had followed in his car several nights as the delicatessen owner drove his clerk home after work. Mrs.

Dumo, whose legs were burned by the lye, idenUfled Hoskins from photographs as the attacker. Informed of Lucero's confessed role, she said, "If that's true then he's an anunal." Goldman's wife, at her husband's side in the hospital, said, "The man (Lucero) is obviously sick and needs help. It shows how twisted some people become in this world. It's so lidicoloos." Police later announced that they had arrested two juveniles in connection with an attack against Goldman four days earlier. Goldman received burns on his neck and bad his clothes damaged but the solution mostly missed its marL Police quoted youths as saying Lucero had hired them to do the job and had even mised Ihe lye solution for them.
