Rather, no research analyst, said the ratings just go "wacko" in the summer and that his predecessor, Walter Cronkite, eventually declined to go on the air in the summer for that reason. For the week ending June 19, "NBC Nightly News" had a rating of 10.1 and a 22 share its 10th win in a row. ABC's" "World News Tonight" had a 9.0 and 20. The "CBS Evening News" had an 8.7 and 19. CBS hasn't had such a low rating since the week of July 6, 1964, when it got an 8.4.

The rating is a percentage of the nation's estimated 87.4 million households with television. The share is a percentage of the viewers tuned in during a particular time period. All the networks' news ratings were down, an apparent symptom of lethargic summer viewing habits. For the week ending June 12, NBC's news had a rating of 10.0, ABC had 9.6 and CBS had 9.5. NEW YORK (AP) Globetrotting Dan Rather returned to his anchor chair last week to find his ratings still on vacation.

"CBS Evening News" got its lowest Nielsen rating in more than 20 years last week and was in third place for an unprecedented fourth week in a row. CBS had blamed its first three weeks in third place on Rather's absence and, more importantly, the National Basketball Association playoffs that disrupted the network's news schedule on the West Coast. Rather had been in the Soviet Union, then Washington state, doing documentaries. He took off a third week to go fishing. Last week, Rather was back, basketball was gone, and CBS was still third.

Rather joked during an interview last week, "If the ratings shoot up, we'll claim a great victory. If they go down, we 11 have another excuse." But David Poltrack, CBS vice president for research, could only offer theories about lighter television-viewing habits, changes in I i Of sm i KWAT I aT vrrij mcr -v-fc. NBC, seemingly unable. to do any wrong this summer, won the-week, its 21st in a row, with an average prime-time rating of 13.5 and a 26 share. CBS had a 10.1 and 19. ABC was a close third with a 9.9 and 19.

The rating is'a percentage of the nation's estimated 87.4 million households with television. The -share is a percentage of the viewers tuned in during a particular time period. The much-ballyhooed "20-20" interview with Rice, the Miami woman whose involvement with Gary Hart led to his withdrawal from the presidential campaign, drew the highest rating for the newsmagazine this season, an 18.2 and a 32 share. But NBC dominated the week, winning every night except Sunday ana tying ABC on Wednesday. "We seem to be in some apex position where everything we have is going wonderfully," said Gerald Jaffe, NBC's vice president for re- search projects.

NBC's "Family Ties" was the top-ranked show, with a rating of 21.5 and a 40 share. The rest of the top 10 were: "The Cosby Show," "Cheers," "20-20," ''Golden Pains," "Mur- der, She Wrote," movie "Crime of Innocence," movie "Picking Up the Pieces" and "Who's the Boss?" NBC's "Miami Vice" ranked 11th after busting a rerun of CBS' "Dallas" down to 57th. Among the few first-run shows, NBC's "The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd" continued to perform well. It ranked 13th with a 27 Sil3I CBS' usually top-10 "60 Minutes" was 17th. A special retrospective of Charles Kuralt's CBS "On the Road" segments was 31st and had a 23 share.

The bottom-rated shows: movie "Champions," "Bugs Bunny Special: All-American Hero," "Our Kids: The Best of Everything," "Sidekicks," "Our World," "West 57th," "Webster," "Dads," "Wizard" and "Gung Ho!" rSCULPTUREDl NAILS I Reg. $35.00 1 By The Sun ALL KRISTA'S SERVICES I 1:15 3:15 5:15 7:15 9:15 1 Appointment Shines Only Everyday TANNING I BED I SPECIAL 20 OFF 3 RATINGS ow ju win OCiblUH 2ff 5 30 Min.
