Mix Aspirin And Imagination And Odd-Ball Uses Are Result Montgomery County News In the time it takes to read this article, close to 200,000 aspirin tablets will be consumed in the United States alone most of them to relieve pain, reduce fever or alleviate inflammation.

However, human imagination, knowing no bounds has conjured up some exotic uses for the familiar little white tablets. Here's a short list of odd-ball aspirin uses compiled by the leading maker of aspirin in this country, the Bayer Company, which recommends none of them: 1. One of the most enduring bits of floral folklore has it that a couple of aspirin tablets added to the water in a vase of cut flowers will make the blooms Oi. iliUAOiitt- polls, Ind. and Sharon L.

Some home canning enthusiasts have experimented with aspirin in putting up beans and tomatoes, corn and piccalilli. Home economists warn against this practice, even though one of the ingredients in the manufacture of aspirin, salicylic acid, has antiseptic properties and was once used to preserve milk and meat.

That was a long time ago, and better preservatives are now available. But as a household analgesic, anti- fever and anti inflammatory agent, aspirin has never been surpassed. 3. Many N'evada fishermen angling for crappies, a kind of calico bass or a related sunfish, say that an aspirin or two in their bait buckets keeps the minnows in a lively state for longer than usual. A spokesman for the Navada Fish and Game Commission suggested that if aspirin works, a shot of rum might Lc better.

Lrfical fishermen say they have other uses for rum. 4. Many houseowners have used aspirin as the triggering mechanism in a home-made alarm system to warn against celler flooding. This highly effective and very inexpensive device is made from a buzzer, dry cell batteries and several lengths of copper wire. Wires are attached to the inner side of the jaws of a pinch-type clothespin so that they will touch with the jaws are closed.

An aspirin tablet is placed between the jaws and the clothespin is hung just above the lowest part of the celler floor. Al long as the aspirin stays dry, the circuit remains open. Any substantial amount of moisture, however, will cause the aspirin to disintegrate, usually within 30 seconds, the circuit will close and the alarm goes off. Start bailing. What, then, are the recommended uses of aspirin? Thej are to relieve headaches, the discomfort and fever of corns and flu, sore throats, muscular aches and pains, to relieve toothache pain and after extractions, to relieve the minor pains of arthritis, rheumatism, bur- sitts, lumbago, neuralgia, neuritis and menstruation.

And while you've been pondering this list, another 20,000 aspirin tablets have been consumed. As an example, the Chamber cited a Federal Reserve Board proposal that card issuers mail cards in unmarked envelopes enclosing an unmarked return envelope with the card in it and a notice that the card may be refused by mailing back the unopened return envelope. Legislation or regulations banning the mailing of unsolicited credit cards or a requirement tor all cr3dit cards to be sent by registered mail will be opposed by the Also the Chamber said it would oppose the imposition of specific criteria in law or regulations for determining the eligibility of persons to receive credit cards.
