The Paris News, Thursday, July 18, 1991 Sports Another late homer dooms Rangers, 6-4 Page 11A By The Associated Press DETROIT If the Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers played more often, people might quit complaining about long ballgamea. Rob Deer's two-run, 10th- inning homer gave the Tigers a 6-4 victory over Texas on Wednesday and a sweep of the three-game series with the Rangers, It was an exciting series. Even Texas manager Bobby Valentine thought so, despite being on the losing end. "It seems like every time we turn around against these guys, something happens," Valentine said. "But I've been around baseball long enough to know that'll change." The win gave the Tigers a 5-4 edge this season with three games remaining, all in Texas.

Nearly all of the games between the Rangers and Tigers have been close. Six were decided by one run and two others by two runs. Texas hit five home runs in this three-game series. The Tigers hit six, but none by Cecil Fielder, the American League leader with 23. "These were great games," Detroit manager Sparky Anderson said.

"If you saw three games like that in the playoffs or World Series, you'd go away talking about it. I know they weren't great for Texas, but if you were impartial, you'd love these games." Deer certainly did. He has just two hits in 23 at-bats since the All- Star break and his average has fallen to .185. But at this rate, Deer might be the most valuable .185 hitter in the major leagues. His last two hits both were homers.

The one he hit Tuesday night, breaking an O-for-18 spell, tied the game in the eighth and the Tigers won that one in the ninth. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't frustrated," Deer said. "But I never said I'd win a batting title. I sure appreciate Sparky staying with me." Wayne Rosenthal (1-1) started the 10th by walking Pete Incaviglia. Doer then hit the next pitch into the left field seats, above the 365-foot mark, for his 19th homer.

"It was a good pitch," Rosenthal said. "I wanted a slider, down and away. Deer just reached out and got extended and did the rest with his wrists. Maybe I won't throw him that pitch again, but you never know. Maybe he was guessing, too." The defeat was especially frustrating for Valentine, who feels the Rangers have played outstanding baseball since, the All- Star break.

But they have almost nothing to show for it. The Rangers started the second half on the road and have lost six of seven games. Of the six defeats, there were two by one run and three by two runs. Wednesday marked the eighth time this season the Rangers have lost on the road in the bottom of the ninth or later. Faldo trails leaders by one after first round of Open By The Associated Press SOUTHPORT, England Defending champion Nick Faldo came up an inch short and a stroke shy on his birthday in the first round of the British Open today as Chip Beck and rookie qualifier Martin Gates dashed to the early lead Faldo, who doubled his age with a 2-under par 68, wielded a hot putter on a day of slow greens that perplexed GregNorman and some other favorites in the 120th British championship. Faldo birdied three of the last five holes, making a 15-foot putt on No. 14, an 8-footer on No. 16 and a 5-footer on No. 17.

A little luck also helped Faldo, who watchd his approach shot on the second hole bounce off the bank of a greenside bunker and roll 18 inches from the pin. That set up the first of his four birdies. He barely missed another when his 15-foot putt on 18 seemed to be breaking perfectly toward the hole, but stopped dead an inch away. "A 68 at the end of the day is not a bad score," Faldo said. "I can look at tomorrow positively.

We lucked out with the weather. I came mentally prepared for it to be pouring all day. It's nice out there." Showers and sunshine alternated through the breezy day, making conditions tricky but not too difficult. The 11-12 National League All- Stars downed Delta County, 3-1, to win the sub-district championship in Cooper.

Kevin Kennemore went the distance to pick up the win. Leading hitters for the Nationals included Stephen More, Billy McClesky, Mackey Moree and Shane Boutwell, as they produced all three runs in the first inning. The Nationals advance to the district tournament, and will play their first game Saturday at 3 p.m. against an undetermined opponent. The 11-12 Paris Americans also picked up a win, downing Gunter 6-5.

They will stage a rematch tonight at 6 p.m. in another sub- district championship. The win earns the Paris team a berth in the state tournament i Atlanta.

The tournament beginb on Saturday, July 27. Paris plays at 1:30 p.m against a team yet to be determined. Errors played a dominant role in determining the final outcome of the game. Paris committed eight errors while Sulphur Springs committed five. The go- ahead inning for Paris, the sixth, saw them score five runs to take the lead.

Of these five runa, only one was earned. Paris went into the fifth down by a score of 7-5. Shane Howard led off the inning with a single to left field. He then stole second and moved over to third on a centerfield single by Tracey Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald then stole second.

After Gearl Keys struck out, Paul Jackson hit a ground ball to Sulphur Springs' shortstop Jay Jones. Jones attempted to throw out Howard at home. His throw was well off the mark, however, allowing Howard to score, Fitzgerald to move to second, and Jackson to advance all the way to second. Fitzgerald later scored on a passed all that advanced Jackson to hird. At this point, the score was tied 7-7.

With two outs, Joby Early struck out, the out that should have ended the inning. The Sulphur Springs catcher missed strike three, however, and by the time he recovered, Jackson had scored the go-ahead run and Early was safe at first. Early eventually stole third. The next batter, Chris Farmer, slammed a single into left field, scoring Early from third. Farmer promptly stole second base.

On his attempt to steal third, the third baseman missed the throw from the catcher, allowing farmer to score. With this run, Paris led by a score of ended up being the final score. Paris were behind from the first inning when Sulphur Springs scored a single run in the firet inning.
