MARQUETTE-Announced that it is joining the Midwestern Collegiate Conference effective September 1. FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) Fairfield University Coach Mitch Buonaguro came to his basketball office like a zombie Thursday, shattered by a technical foul that cost his club a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament game less than 24 hours earlier. "I felt I let the team down," said the 33-year-old coach, his eyes glazed and bloodshot from a sleepless night.

Buonaguro's sin wasn't running out on the court, his shirttail flapping, to hug Harold Brantley after the freshman center's layup had apparently given the Stags a 60-59 victory over St. Peter's in the opening round of the MAAC Tournament Wedneaday night. His sin was doing it with two sec- onds left in the game. Referee Jack Harmon called a two- shot technical foul on Buonaguro for leaving the coaching box. The Peacocks' Willie Haynes went to the free- throw line and made both shots.

Alex Roberts made two more after being fouled on the inbounds pass and St. Peter's won, 63-60. "In those two seconds I had ach- eived the ultimate with this team, and then I saw it all go out the window," Buonaguro said. Fairfield protested the loss Thursday, contending in part that St. Peter's Coach Ted Fiore should also have been called for a technical foul for leaving his coaching box.

But it was rejected because NCAA rules do not permit protests. "I came out on the court in jubilation. There's obviously a difference between that and coming out on the court to protest something," Buonaguro said. "Should I have been penalized for that? According to the rule book, yes. Technically, I'm not supposed to be on the court.

"I let my emotions get the best of me. I was wrong there. There's no question." Distraught, Buonaguro had to be restrained from going on the court again by his assistant coaches and then didn't enter his team's locker room for about half an hour after the game. "I felt I let them down. Openly, emotionally, I really broke down," said Buonaguro.

The Lady Coyotes will Concordia College (Neb.) a 67-62 winner over Marycrest Wesleyan coach Tracy Rietzke, who was named Kansas Conference Coach of the Year Thursday, credited his team's play over the last 10 minutes of the game as the key to the win. "In the last few minutes, we hit the boards pretty intensely," Rietzke said. "That gave us chances to run the shot clock.

We showed a little more patience in the second half, especially late." Dana Mathes scored 26 points to lead Clinch Valley. KANSAS WESLEYAN 75, CLINCH VALLEY 62 Clinch Valley, Va. (62) Pam D. But Bottom hit the shot despite tight defensive pressure by Garcia, and Friends got the clock stopped at 0:02. The Falcons attempted a full- court pass on the inbounds, but Anderson deflected it to send the Spartans to the District 10 championship game for a second straight year. Friends coach Jim Littell cited his team's lack of composure against Marymount's press as the deciding factor.

"We just started throwing the ball all over the gym," said Littell, whose team finished the season with an 1810 record. "This team lacks discipline on and off the floor. We got in a situation where we were looking east and west against the press instead of up the floor. We just didn't attack it well." Marymount, now 23-11, had four players score in double figures, led by Michelle Kobza's 19 points. Anderson finished with 15 points while Stallbaumer and Poitevint had 15 apiece.

"Our press has helped us in so many games," Spence said. "So many tunes this year the press has lifted us to a win after being behind early." Garcia scored 21 points tp lead Friends. Heidi Wimmer added 19 and Johnson 17..
