Winners were: Horse Judging Results Given By Edwards With interest running high, especially in the long entry lists of Palominos and Tennessee walking horses, horsemen at the state fair Tuesday night received the judging reports of George Edwards of Palo Alto, horse judge. 'f Champioh stallion palomino was Mrs.

M. C. Fleming's Golden Rex of Troutdale, and Joe Fisher's Flicka of Warren won championship mare honors among palominos. Slocum and Kerr's entry. Sir Wilson Allen, of Eugene took the blue ribbon as champion stallion among the walking horses and Tennessee Topsy, the Forest Wallaces' entry of Portland, was judged champion mare.

Salem Jail WEST SALEM, Sept. 2 With a two bunk jail equipped with only two blankets. West Salem has for two nights in succession recently had three prisoners, the city council was informed here tonight. Except to inquire "if the jail were steam the council members paid little attention to the apparent request for additional bedding. The city recorder, R.

E. Patti-son, was directed to -obtain forms for making applications for state funds to be used on the streets in industrial and other rapidly growing areaof the town. It was suggested that such funds may perhaps be obtained for Eighth street in the vicinity of the proposed new junior high school and also for use on Seventh, Eighth, Murlark and Bassett streets. Repair of the city streets especially at the point of bus stops is to be investigated by the street committee which was empowered to act upon its findings. Mrs.

Vet Loans at All-Time High C-7 "vState loans to world war II vet erans reached a new high during August when 60 loans were granted for a total of $221,000 teoaln ed for a total of $221,900 to veterans for their purchase of farms or homes. August loans topped the previous high total of the month before by 14 and brought the total of state loans to 568 since the state department of veterans affairs began operating two years ago, Crose stated.

Loans in August averaged as against the overall average figure of $2,322 the discrepancy due primarily to the recent state legislature's approval of a loan ceiling of $6,000 or double the previous $3,000 ceiling. Thelma Brown Hurt in Wreck WEST SALEM. Sept.

2 Thelma Brown, West Salem city treasurer, suffered severe facial injuries in an automobile accident Monday night at Kings Valley, Benton county, as she was returning with her husband, O. C. Brown, from the Labor day holiday at the Ore gon coast. Mrs. Brown is now in a Dallas hospital where it is expected she will be confined for a week.

Three parked cars, two On one side of the highway and one on the opposite side, were so parked as to be invisible to the Browns as they approached. This was the report of Mrs. Brown's father, L. Huckaby, West Salem building insDector. here tonight after visit ing his daughter.

Brown suffered an injured arm and shoulder in the accident, Huckaby said. Girl Hurt in Wreck Still Unconscious After Three Days Norma Jean Jones, 14, Salem route 4, critically injured Saturday afternoon when the was struck by a car driven by George Mann, Freewater, while riding her bicycle near the 12th street junction and highway 99E, was still unconscious in Salem General hospital Tuesday She is suffering fram a frac tured skull and internal injuries, hospital attendants said. Lloyd McKenzie, of 1465 Mis sion seriously injured in an auto-train wreck at a railroad crossing near the penitentiary early Saturday morning, was said to be "improved by attendants at the same hospital. Betsey Lou Rogers, 18, of 130 S. 24th who was riding with McKenzie, was killed in the collision.

Her funeral will be held in Portland today. ins Plaudits Of Audience The State Fair Follies, playing its second night Tuesday at the fairgrounds grandstand, won the plaudits of a large crowd, for its fast-paced entertainment. The Lipham Four two young sisters and two brothers went through their acrobatic routines to the crowd's applause, and their striking pyramids and other acts of balancing prowess featured the hour and a half show. The Lip-hams recently completed a long -Stand with Ken Murray's Black outs in Los Angeles. State Supreme Court Faces Heavy Docket The state supreme court, on vacation for the past two months, reconvened Tuesday with a docket of approximately 99 cases. She reports that 27 growers loaded 300 pickers from the office Monday morning and 38 growers loaded over 300 Tuesday.

Loading, she stated is now being handled entirely by Dean Omans, previously assisted by Mrs. Rachel Hilton who left the office Tuesday to return to her teaching position at Eola. Family groups will have especially good hop picking conditions in the next two weeks, Mrs. Turn-bull predicted as she advised families who are available to take advantage of the camp facilities now offered by growers of the area. It was Dr. Evans opinion that not mere than a dozen of these operations would be performed en patients in his institution within the next year. Roy Simmons manages the show for the second year, Charles Barclay is ring master and Pat Zosel ribbon girt 'Get Acquainted' Meetings Slated At Salem Schools The pre-school opening meetings for new pupils in Salem elementary schools are for only those children who will be entering school for the first time this year and for those pupils of higher elementary grades who are new to Salem, Superintendent Frank B.

Bennett stressed Tuesday. The school district 24 superintendent said all pupils who attended public schools here last year need not attend the get-acquainted meetings in all elementary schools, which have been set for 1:30 p. m. Friday, September 12. Regular school opening is Monday, September 15.
