Society THE WELLINGTON (TEXAS) LEADER Thunday, March 31, 1966 Wellington Clubs, Members Receive Honors at District Federation Meet Collingsworth County club women were well represented by participation and awards received at the recent sixth annual convention of Top of Texas District, Texas Federation of Women's Clubs, held in Hereford. This convention theme observed the General Federation of Women's Clubs' diamond jubilee. With that thought in mind "jewels" were selected by respective clubs. Domestic Science, Wellington's oldest Lillie HOC Hears Mrs. Patterson The Lillie Home Demonstration Club met in the home of Mrs.

Zook Thomas recently, with Mrs. L. M. Bartlett, vice president, in charge of the business session. During roll call the names of potential new members were given.

Mrs. George Patterson of the Fabric and Hobby Shop presented the program, "Fashions for Milady." She discussed linings for dresses and other garments and displayed si bon- ne, one of the newer lining materials, also the new iron-on bias tape for hems and finishes. Mrs. Patterson told of the processes In making the new synthetics and the contents of the materials. "Yellow is the number one in the top ten colors for this year," said the speaker.

"The bare-arm look, bonded materials and laces are high fashion." The recreation was directed by Mrs. Mac Horton. Refreshments were served to All Contestants Kate High Wellington Musicians for State TIL Band Contest Three comettists and their accompanists will represent Wellington high school in the State Inter-scholastic League Band Contest finals after winning this right in the recent district solo and ensemble contests at Canyon. This will be the cornet trio, Bryant Harris, David Groves and Dwight Bowen. David will compete as a soloist.

Mickye Ann Kendrick is the accompanist for the trio and Regina Ferguson for the soloist. These were but two of a Mrs. Elmer Haralson, Mrs. Mac Horton, Mrs. Haskell Manuel, Mrs.

L. M. Bartlett Mrs. Bill Langford, Mrs. Ozro Bartlett, Mrs.

Sandy Parsons and Mrs. George Patterson of Wellington. Members will hold an all-day quilting in the home of Bart lett on Thursday, March 31 Each one attending is to bring a covered dish. Mrs. Peters Has Altar Society Mrs.

Jesse Peters was host ess to the Altar Society of Ou Mother of Mercy Catholt Church Tuesday evening, Mar 22. During the business session plans were made for Easte services. B. B. Martin was Dodson Civic Club's "jewel" nnd Mrs. A. J.

Fires was the "Jewel" of 195-1 Study Club. The "jewels" were honored at. a banquet. At the luncheon the following day, Mrs. Stevenson was given individual recognition for her years of service to the federation and to her community, which included Mrs.

Stevenson's attending the GFWC convention when the only Texas woman thus far was elected GFWC president. The club award for the most nusual celebration of the dia- nond jubilee went to Welling- on's City Federation of Worn- n's Clubs for its diamond ju- ilee fashion show-coffee; this vas hosted last September by le outgoing executive committee of GFWC with the as- istance of The Fair Store, latch Dry Goods, Saied's De- artment Store and The Fash- on Shop. Affiliates of Wellington GFWC ad endorsed Mrs. B. M.

Sims candidate for district first ice president; she was for a 2-year term. District board members at- ending were Mrs. Mack Bush, Mrs. John Coleman, Mrs. Fires and Mrs.

Martin. At the board luncheon Mrs. Martin, a life member, gave icr report on club ethics and ater recited the collect before he complete assembly. She also is a member of the retorts judging committee. Mrs.

Sims presided for the oral reports session and for the Diamond Showcase" of Departments. Mrs. Bush, education department chairman, "produced and emceed' 'a take-off on "I've Jot a Secret." Wellington residents serving as well-known TV personalities were Mrs. Velman Warrick, Mrs. Sam Adams and Mrs, Sam Helmers.

Mrs. Coleman, a state and district division chairman, participated in the public affairs department's "This Is Your Life." Mrs. Fires, crafts chairman, was a part of the fine arts der partment's "Premiere Performance." She also directed and narrated the "Fashions for Fun" fashion show at a luncheon. Modeling from Wellington were Mrs. Adams for the 1954 Study Club and Mrs.

Helmers for 1924 Study Club. Dodson Civic Club was awarded first place in crusade for lights division; third place in home and recreation. Mrs, T. Bogle is president. 1954 Study Club was awarded second place in safety division; second in home and recreation; third in library services division.

Mrs. Paul Spillman is president. 1924 Study Club was awarded second place in United Nations division; first in Texas large number of groups that competed nnd won high ratings in Canyon. "There are three classes of solos and ensembles. Class I is more difficult and qualified a student for state," bxplained Band Director James Larson.

The classes are alsb graded on five levels, first or super- or, second or excellent, third or good, fourth or lair, nnd 'ifth or poor. All Wellington bane entries first, second or third ratings, Mr. Larson said. Miss Thompson Engaged Mr. and Mrs.

Sam H. Thompson, 1603 Childress announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Samtnie Lu Thompson, to Kenneth Allen Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Ruthven, 4821 Hallmark Dallas. Miss Thompson is a member of the Aglaian Literary Social Club, and of the Ser- cnaders, Texas Woman's University all-girl stage band.

Mr. Davis was a student at SMU and TCU, and graduated from Fowler's Aeronautical School of Flight Engineering. He has completed a seven-year tour in the United States Air Force and is currently a Captain in the USAF Reserves and a commercial pilot. The First Methodist Church will be the setting for the June 12 wedding. In addition to the rants, the Wellington were: Flute trio: Jane Mike Davis and June third division.

Mrs. WMU Circles Hold Group Meetings The Woman's Missionary Union of the First Baptist Church met with their circle groups on Monday and Tuesday of this week.

The Frances Crawford Circle met with Mrs. Ernest Maxwell. Mrs. Maxwell also presented the program, with the assistance of Mrs. Ocie Scott, Mrs, Billy Porter, Mrs.

W. F. Harbin, Mrs. Eugene Brewer and Mrs. Oscar Peeples.

Wellington FHA Sets Bake Sale The Wellington Future Homemakers chapter will hold a bake sale Saturday, April 2, from 9 a.m. until noon. This will be in front of Parsons Drug. Twenty-one 4-H Girls, more than twice the number expected, participated in the annual Favorite Food Show Saturday, March 26. The winners, announced by Miss Loleta Kees, home demonstration agent, were in junior and senior divisions.

June Popwell was the senior winner in the milk foods division, and Joye Hudspeth in the fruit and vegetable division. The junior winners were Beth Peters, bread and cereal division, and Dee Chappell in the meat section. The alternates were Susan Peters, meat division, and Brenda Bentley, in the fruit and vegetable division. The winners will participate in the district 4-H foods contest held at Canyon later this spring. Miss Kees explained that the standard 4-H club show score St.

Joseph's Hospital Notes card is used in judging the entries. The exhibitor's knowledge of foods and nutrition counts for a possible 40 of the 100 points. The general appearance, quality and flavor, cost and other factors can bring a girl as much as 20 points, and the appropriate table appointments and the girl's own personal appearance can count for another 20 points. The recipe and the day's menu account for the final 20 points in the judging. Four-H girls entering the senior division were Joye Hudspeth, June Popwell, Glenda -ancaster, Frances Hayes, Cathy Thomason and Rita -ackey.

Mrs. Eva Fwleher, March Spanish Catholics Plan Meeting The Spanish Catholics of Collingsworth County will hold a meeting Sunday, April 3, which will be attended by visiting priests and Catholics from other parts of the state.

The afternoon meeting will begin at 3 p.m. in Our Mother of Mercy Church at 12th and Floydada Streets, with the Way of the Cross in Spanish. Following this, the group will adjourn to the Bura Handley Community Center for a barbecue lunch suid a series of talks by Father Antonio Gonzales of Plainview and professors in the Cursillo movement from Lubbock and Plainview. This will be for adults and teenagers only, said Father Patrick Burke, priest of the local church. are expected also also from Childress, Paducah, Hollis, Mangum and Shamrock.

Jan Glenn Wins Honor Miss Jan Glenn recently was named Miss Southwest Contact Lens of 1966 in competition with 57 girls from the southwestern states. The contest was held in Dallas and was conducted by the Southwest Contact Lens Association, made up of six states. Dr. Chester Harrison was Miss Glenn's sponsor. She received an award of $100.

A number of special events were planned for the girls, including a banquet in their honor. This is only the latest of many honors to come to the Texas Tech student. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Barney Glenn, and was accompanied to Dallas by her mother.

Coming to visit Mrs, L. W. McCIure late last week were a son and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. James McCIure of Tulare, and Mr.

and Mrs. Rudolph Miller and daughter, Miss Rena Gail Miller ol Wichita Falls. Mr. Miller and Miss Miller returned home on Sunday and the others joined them early this week. Mrs.

Opal Boverie of Lub bock visited in the home of her mother, Mrs. Edith Estes this past week end. Kansas Publishers Visit in County Mr. and Mrs. Paul Alling- lam, publishers of the Atchison Daily Globe, Atchison, were in Wellington for a short time Tuesday, March 29 to see Mr.

and Mrs. Deskins Wells and other friends. They visited first with her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Fain at Lutie, and they planned to go from here to Memphis to see a niece, Mrs.

Don Curl and lamily. Mr. and Mrs. Allingham had come to Canyon for a short visit with her mother, Mrs. T.

T. Fain, who is recovering from a broken arm. Bowling Team Wins Tourney A women's bowling team, sponsored by the Wellington State Bank, won the Childress City Association Bowling Tournament recently and received a large trophy. It is now on display at the bank. The team bowled a score of 3,050 in three games of tourn ament play.

Captain of the team was Lo rene Jenkins, and the other members were Mel lie Lacy ol Wellington, Austia Vaughan of Dodson, Marie Lander and Jean Hassell of Childress. Linda Karnes, a student of West Texas State University, visited with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Karnes this past week end. Mr.

and Mrs. W. V. Coursey of Amarillo visited Mr. and Mrs.

F. W. Adkins and Mr. and Mrs. John Calcote over the week end.

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Brinson and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Miller of Borger spent this past Saturday with Mrs.

Joseph's Hospital, left Sunday, March 27, for Jackson, to be with her mother, Mrs. Dora Woods, who is to undergo surgery. Sister Perpetua returned here only recently from Denver, where she has been assigned. She left St. Joseph's in to attend the summer session of Marycrest College, Piven port, Iowa, where she is work ing toward her degree.

Mr. and Mrs. Keith Bowen and daughter, Klmberly, visited parents, Mr. and Mrs. King Powen Tuesday and, Wednesday this week.
