"TUE EARL OB i NEW YORK, June 21 pursued an extremely Iregular course In the opening session the week. In t.ho first three, hours generally strong tone was displayed and vigorous buying operations went ahead In various parts of the list, hurrying several representative Issues to new highs on the recovery from the March break and Pullman and Reading to the hlghent prices reached in several years. In the afternoon call money fen'd to points from the renewal charge of four per cent.

This development came In theraoe. of Hatur- day's clearing house surplus of 118,758,890, compared with a deficit of $1.411,000 theprecedlng week, foreshadowing heavy semi annual settlements at the end of this month. As a result of the higher charge assessed for speculative borrowing prices sold off sharply at the start of the last hour. However, this wave of selling was checked after reactions of one to three points had occurred In the industrial leaders and the closing df ils were characterized by a fairly good tone. Closing prices: Allis Chalmers.

Box 5, Register. LONDON. June English science Is giving Mars a rest. After more than 20 years of fruitless effort to establish communication with our planetary neighbor 35,000,000 miles distant, English astronomers have abandoned the Ida and down to the more practical and routine duty of solving the problem of the Internal temperature of stars. Other nations can now cease to worry over any prospects of the extension of the British imperial policy to the other worlds of the universe and the people of Mars.

"Although a few in the world, of astronomy still appear greatly excited over the hope of the establishment of communication with Mars we are r.o longer taking an Interest In the subject," an official of the Royal Astronomical society told the United Press. "It Is possible that life In some form does exist on Mars, but whether this life could comprehend any kind of communication from other parts of the universe is ery doubtful. "The public, in Its present comprehension of the theory of life on Mars, has been greatly misled by astronmers themselves In the talk of the of Mars. People now are almost lead to believe through the all too lose talk of Martian canals and bodies of water that the planet is Inhabited by humans like ourselves who spend their days digging these canals and doing other tasks much the same as we do, of course erroneously created by astronomers themselves." Et Is pointed out that the girst spectroscopic observations made by the astronomer Huggins In 1867, indicated the presence of water on the planet and the view has been supported by others. Lowell was the first astronmer to propose the system of canals, perhaps artifically made.

BD. OF TRADE! Tribes Continue Signs of Warfare CHICAGO, June grains closed lower on the Chicago Board of Trade today In sympathy with the sharp slump in wheat prices. The fact that traders were more inclined to watch thecash prices than the futures also contributed to today's dip. Eastern houses were big sellers on all bulges. Although wheat was not very active, it closed sharply lower in all positions.

Liverpool was weak and exports were estimated at about 300,000 bushels for the day. July corn closed at the low mark on the crop, and other positions were also fractionally lower tlian Saturday's closing figures. Oats were easier today and closed sharply lower In all positions. Provisions closed lower. PARIS, Juno 21.

Messages from Morocco throw some light on the attitude adopted by individual tribes after their surrender of Abd-el- Krim. It is stated tnat some chiefs left their tribes and fled to tho Tangier zone. Submit your offers to A LOT OS HAQ DeeN DOINGT his SHT along CROSSWORD PUZZLE SYDNEY, June The only color problem which Australia has to handle at present Is the saving of the remnants of the aborigines. The civilization of the white man has made heavy inroads upon their numbers. The aborigines cannot tackle work as whites understand it. They are a naturally indolent people, who believe that hunting food is the only aim in life. A little band of enthusiasts in Adelaide has evolved a scheme by which they hope to further the welfare of the aborigines.

They have drawn up a petition for presentation to the federal parliament, asking for the reservation of land in some part of the continent for the establishment for a model aboriginal state. The petition asks that this model state should ultimatelty be managed by a native tribunal, as far as possible, according to native laws and customs, but prohibiting cannibalism and cruel rites. At some future time, it is suggested, the administrator himself should be a native, but meantime such assistance as may be necessary should be provided. The aboriginal races, It is pointed out, are fast dying out, because, among other reasons, well-meant and costly experiments in their interests have not been on the right lines. J.
