THE NEWS, Maryland Friday, April INK A Lenten Meditation The Lenten Experience Is Time Of Self Examination, And Growth By THE REV. IYLE E. HARPER (Pastor, Walkersvillo Methodist Charge) Most of us have our ways of watching for the coming of spring. We look to the plant world for signs of growth, for green buds and leaves which speak of us of life and for colored flowers which bring beauty and grace into our lives. We look to the animal world and observe the return of the birds, soon finding ourselves much inspired by their songs.

We see much of the animal kingdom mating and preparing for this busy time of life and growth and work. In fact, we ourselves make many preparations, too. We prepare the ground for farming and gardening. We give our homes a good spring bouse cleaning. We get ready for more outdoor living.

We make a lot of needed improvements on our property. In short, for all of nature, it seems, spring is a time of coming to life, of preparing to live well and fully. This is exactly what happens within the Christian community as it participates in the Lenten-Easter experience, for spiritually this is a time of self-examination and "house cleaning" nnd preparation for life and growth. Lent is a time of getting ready for God's new life to come into our "wintered" kind of existence. We can expect renewal at the hand of God; we can expect Christian growth to take place in our lives; and we can expect the God of life to enable and empower us to to live freely, joyfully, creatively, responsibly.

Christians find this a most ex-o Dorothy HOW TO HANDLE THREE NEIGHBORHOOD PESTS By Dr. Joyce Brothers Deal- Dr. Brothers: We have just moved into a new neighborhood. I find that some of my new neighbors drive me to distraction. How in the world can a woman handle these neighborhood pests? I want to be liked, but not driven out of my wits.

What do you Dear Y.B.: In nearly any neighborhood, you're likely to find all types of housewives. Some, you'll soon find, are great fun to know. Their friendship adds a lot. Others, you will also learn, are the bane of your existence. Leading the nuisance list is what we class as the "constant critics." Whatever you buy, select, or often do, the constant critic never quite approves.

You've missed somehow, she implies. You should have done something else, and she'll have definite ideas about it. You'll find she's the constant critic of her neighbors, too. It isn't confined to you. The chances are, you'll find her husband has reacted in self-defense by often having to work late at his office.

He's escaping. You may need to, also, but dif- ferently, Here's how you might handle! her. Say you've bought new drapes or new anything. She arrives on the scene, and, given a chance, will tell you that they--whatever it is--clashes with the room of your present decor. It just isn't fight.

She has other ideas. Don't give her a chance to start. Get in the first word and say, "You know, Sally, everyone I've talked to says that they (the drapes) couldn't be better. So, I know you'll like them. This psychologically fences her in politely, and it gives her only one choice--to go along, too.

She can't bear to appear to be the community misfit, which she probably is, but would hate to admit. Second on the community- nuisance list is the "I-must- know-all" type. She makes you fight for every inch of your privacy. She must know exactly who you invited to your party last night, your family income, and your personal detail. Nothing is sacred.

Your business is her business. Then she'll pass it on to neighbors as general Intelligence. Her husband, chances are, learned years ago to say, "Yes, dear," and then does just as he pleases without disclosing anything. Your cue as a feminine neighbor is a little different. You employ directness.

Tell her quietly but firmly that there are some things that one doesn't feel free to discuss, and you're sure she'll understand. She'll get the point. With this psychological thrust, the chances are she'll stay your friend, but now without so much nosiness. Third on the community- nuisance list is the plan-disrupter. She regards your time as her own time, and if given the chance, will spoil your schedule and planning and all but throw off the best part of your day.

Your defense? When she calls, invite her in cordially. Then, when she has a try at disruption, tell her quite frankly that you plan so-and-so in so many minutes, and keep looking at your watch or a clock to drive home the point. This is a psychological finesse. You've set your plans and schedule at the beginning of her visit in the first few moments, so she has no leeway left for sabotage of your day's schedule. It works well, too.

Fire Inspectors' Short Course Set A four-day short course for fire inspectors has been scheduled here by the University of Maryland fire service extension beginning April 6.

Experts in such areas as fire and building codes, chemical analysis, radioactives and other fire hazards will lecture and lead discussions. The program, offered free-of-charge by the university in the public interest, is being sponsored by the uni- citing time in the Christian year, for here we find the Lord of the season (spring, summer, fall and winter) is also the God with us men in the seasons of the soul. From our winters he guides us to the spring; from our dying he carries us to real living; and from our death he resurrects us to a new life in Christ. Look closely at these words from Titus (NEB) for perhaps we can hear what God would be saying to us in this Lenten-Easter season. "For at one time we ourselves in our folly and obstenacy were all astray.

We were slaves to passion and pleasures of every kind. Our days were passed in yours this day through the goodness and loving kindness of God Saviour. Amen. malice and envy; we were odious ourselves and we hated one another. But when the kindness and generosity of God our Saviour dawned the world, then, not for any good deeds of our own, but because he was merciful, he saved us through the water of rebirth and the renewing power of the Holy Spirit.

For he sent down the Spirit upon us plentifully through Christ our Saviour, so that, justified by his grace, we might in hope become heirs to eternal life. These are words you may trust." May the experience of rebirth and renewal, of growth and true living in relationship to God be "I Say, What A Marvelous Idea Easter Baskets for Gourmets!"
