The first representative of Egypt I paw was the pilot who came aboard my steamer, and he was a barefooted Egyptian. I saw only Egyptians in the custom house, in the postoflices and telegraph offices, in the railway stations and on the trains. There were only Egyptian police in the streets and Egyptian soldiers to be seen galloping about the Pyramids and other of the famous monuments or standing before the many palaces of the Khedive scattered over the country. I saw many more Greeks and Italians than Britons and heard more French than English.
