Look Like Fishing Flies Bugs From Sky BV RALPH BRADY You get a terrifically graphic panoramic picture of what the Great Flood of 1945 did to the Ohio River Valley here when you cruise over Cincinnati in an airplane The scene unfolded before you at 100 miles an hour leaves you gasping as though someone had doused you with a bucket of cold water In fact viewed from 2000 feet altitude the city looks like an scale model of a town after someone had poured a few buckets of muddy water on it Magnitude Revealed Unless you were affected directly you visualize the magnitude of the flood unless you see It from the air So come along with 1st Lt Leonard Osborn of the Civil Air Patrol on a cruise over the inundated valley Our first big circle after leaving Parks Watson Airport is over Lunken Field and the adjacent city playground The roofs of the Administration Building and the hangars look like rectangular blocks floating in fared far worse than Covington its neighbor Now we circle the Millcreek barrier dam and head up Millcreek Union Terminal stands like an island of refuge In the midst of the swollen creek The roof of the grandstand at Qrosley Field cuts a sharp pattern in the water All the way up to Knowlton's Corner at the foot of the Ludlow avenue viaduct the flood waters have speared into the low places railroad yards streets and fields near the several crossing viaducts Pint-Size Rowboats Corner itself looks (ike a little lake cradled in the surrounding high ground Hoffner Ludlow and Blue Rock and the foot of Hamilton avenue are underwater Rowboats pint-size from your height crawl along ferrying people over the watery barrier As you wing back to a landing at the Watson Airport you think a lot and finally you say bitterly: Yes a mess and it happen" But there it is The big question is: "Shall it happen again?" a sea of water The light poles on the playfield tennis courts stick up like little pins in a map Silence Nearly Audible A submerged C-47 Army transport plane looks like a big trout fly An Army trainer plane nearby looks like a little bug The Beechmont levee alongside the Little Miami River resembles a slender trace of shrubbery against a watery backdrop You almost can hear the silence Upstream you see the roofs of Newtown apparently afloat Now we are flying over Eastern avenue up the Ohio River Railroad tracks and cross streets are flooded spottily in the vicinity of the Waterworks Pumping Station the Cincinnati Gas Electric Co branch and the Cincinnati Gymnasium Boat Club the roof of the Green Line steamer landing with a -passenger craft riding smoothly alongside The public landing is not visible The bridges are steel ribbons of safety Muddy Desolation The Newport downtown section is a scene of muddy desolation It Lausche Interviewed Here The Post from the' deck of a Higgins patrol boat prowling eyes of the Coast Guard Cdr Francis Leahy In charge of Ohio Valley evacuation operations for the Coast Guard his aide Lt Kavanaugh Lt Arthur Schletker veteran riverman here and newsmen were aboard Ploughing into the murky river from the foot of Pike street the craft headed upstream A 10-mile-an-hour current twice the normal speed slowed progress to a creep Cold Perilous The river boiled past the bow laden with hazardous driftwood and thousands of tons of valuable topsoil a colossal waste of fertile farm land It was cold on the water A pale sunlight afforded little warmth The Dayton and Bellevue waterfronts were a panorama of half-submerged trees and red and green rooftops Oyer all was an ominous stillness- Yet behind those watery desolate streets the business of living somehow went on as usual Here and there between rows of protruding rooftops rescue boats piled high with household belongings laboriously rowed shoreward Immobile faces- gazed at the power boat One man waved resignedly Water Laps Sides The main pumping station of the Cincinnati Gas ft Electric Co water lapped the sides of its flood walls protecting vital turbines within huge coal piles appeared as miniature islands The surrounded Ohio River Yacht Club sleek cabin cruii era hugged the safety of their piers the fetid waters seeming to taunt them Lunken Airport its once proud efficiency reduced to submerged impotence a stranded airliner seemed to perch atop the water Back down the river Newport Covington the Cincinnati waterfront mute desecrated homes and warehouses The animal kingdom suffered too A forlorn bunny huddled on a jagged rock surrounded by acres of water This is the 1945 flood triumph once again of the elements over mankind 2 Saved From Nips Arrive on West Coast Two Covington men rescued from the Jap prison camp at Ca-banatuan in the Philippines have returned to the United States They are Pvt Roy Morris son of
