Savannah Arrives At Berth By WILLIAM STRACENER United Press International MOUNT PLEASANT The 595-foot Savannah, the only nuclear-powered passenger-cargo ship ever built, glided easily Thursday into a permanent berth in Charleston harbor to join three other historic vessels at the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum. When all four ships are opened to the public next summer, Patriots Point will become the largest maritime museum in the world. The Savannah, majestic with its gleaming white hull encircled by a red stripe, had been moored at the Charleston Army Depot since late 1975 while the Patriots Point Development Authority obtained funding and built a $1.9 million pier extension. The museum, which opened initially with the aircraft carrier Yorktown, the famous "Fighting Lady" of World War II, now includes the Clamagore, a submarine, and the Laffey, a destroyer. The Yorktown and Clamagore are open to the public, but the Laffey will not be ready for display until next summmer.

The Savannah, which displaces 22,000 tons and could carry 9,400 tons of cargo at a cruising speed in excess of 20 knots, docked about 5:30 p.m. but will not be opened to tourists until late December or early January, said Patriot Points spokesman Sandra Thomas. "She's in beautiful shape," Miss Thomas said. "She has luxurious staterooms for 60 passengers, a swimming pool, lounge and a restaurant. We hope to lease those out to the private sector." The Bureau of Radiological Health of the state Department of Health and Environmental Control said the ship poses no radiation danger to Charleston area residents because the nuclear power plant has been removed.

It said visitors to the ship will not be exposed to any more radiation than local residents receive from natural radiation. Some radiation warning signs remain on the ship at entrances to controlled areas, however, the said.
